If you’re looking for a scenic hike in Slovenia that has breathtaking alpine views, Slemenova Špica should be on top of your list. With such a cozy trail, many families and people from all over the world come along.

Located near Kranjska Gora and around 2 h drive from Bovec and the Soča Valley, it’s a perfect adventure in Slovenia.

While it isn’t as famous as some of Slovenia’s other hiking destinations, that’s exactly what makes it so special. The name reminds me to the popular Sljeme mountain in Zagreb and while in the city visit the most Instagrammable café bars and Floraart in May on the Bundek Lake.

Expect fairy-tale landscapes, panoramic mountain views and stunning scenery around every corner.

Why Visit Slemenova Špica

Slemenova Špica is one of Slovenia’s hidden gems. Although it’s less well-knownthan any other hikes in the Julian Alps, the views are nothing short of spectacular. Every step reveals postcard-worthy scenery. From lush alpine meadows to dramatic mountain peaks. Seeming endless in the distance, this hiking paradise can be your favourite memory from Slovenia.

The landscape feels almost magical with breathtaking viewpoints at every turn. To improve your hiking photography in a group or simply enjoy being surrounded by nature, you’ll find yourself stopping often just to admire the scenery.

What is The Slemenova Špica Hike Like

The trail to Slemenova Špica is considered relatively easy and is suitable for most hikers with a moderate fitness level. While there are few uphill sections, the ascent is gradual and enjoyable rather than exhausting.

Parts of the trail feature rocky terrain, adding a little adventure without making the hike too challenging.

I was surprised by how many families were hiking with babies in child carriers, which says a lot how accessible the trail is.

Another thing we notices was the number of international visitors. Along the way, we met hikers from Spain, the Netherlands, the Chech Republic and several ther countries. Proving that this beautiful trail is becoming increasingly popular, it’s an amazing short hike before heading home.

Before reaching the summit, you’ll come across a beautiful alpine meadow that makes a perfect place to take a break. We stopped there to relax, soak in the peaceful atmosphere or maybe take some snack.

And then comes highligh of the hike. Once you reach the summit of Slemenova Špica, you’re rewarded with panoramic views in every direction. No matter where you look, the surrounding peaks create a landscape that feels straight out of a movie.

Ajdovska Deklica- The Heathen Maiden

If you’re visiting the Vršić Pass, don’t miss the short walk to Ajdovska Deklica (The Heathen Maiden). It’s one of the area’s most fascinating landmarks, you’ll need only 15 minutes uphill from the mountain hut Tičarjev Dom.

The rock face resembles the profile of a woman’s face, clearly visible from the trail.

According to Slovenian legend, a mountain maiden predicted that a newborn boy would one day become a famous hunter. Angry that she revealed the future, the other maidens turned her into stone. Her face has remained carved into the mountainside ever since, watching over the valley below.

After you walk, it’s the perfect place to relax with a drink in Tičarjev dom while enjoying the breathtaking views. Just five minutes from Ajdovska Deklica, you’ll also find another smaller mountain hut.

Vršić Pass- The Mountain Crossroad connecting Kranjska Gora & Soča Valley

Vršić Pass is Slovenia’s highest mountain pass and one of the country’s most scenic drives. Famous for its 50 hairpin bends, it connects Kranjska Gora and Soča Valley.

The pass is also the starting point for numerous hiking trails, making it a paradise for outdoor lovers. Whether you’re planning a challenging mountain adventure or simply want to enjoy the hike, Vršić is well worth a visit.

With panoramic viewpoints and dramatic limestone peaks, it’s one of the highlights of the Julian Alps.

Occasionally gathering numerous bikers, it was also the case during our visit.

Hiking Trails at Vršić Pass

Vršić Pass is one of the best places in Slovenia for hiking, offering trails for every experience level. Besides the popular hike to Slemenova Špica, you can also explore Mojstrovka, Prisojnik and Mala Mojstrovka. Also, several shorter scenic walks around the Pass will unfold new discoveries.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing hike or a more challenging alpine adventure, Vršić is the perfect starting point.

How to Get to Slemenova Špica

Taking an overnight stay in Tičarjev Dom, you can start your hike here. To avoid the crowds and peak heat, we were ready already at 7 am. To reach the summit, you’ll need 1,5h without stops, plus going back the same way. Near the mountain hut, you can park the car. There are also some parking places at the crossroads, but watching the buses and other cars passing by was like a movie. It will take a while to go down on a curvy road, and for our bus was pretty challenging.

Also, at the crossroads you’ll see several souvenir kiosks.

From Bovec, it takes about 2h to reach the mountain hut Tičarjev Dom.

Essential Hiking Information for Slemenova Špica

Covering 1909m, Slemenova Špica has breathtaking views of the Slovenian Alps.

Vršić is a popular mountain pass in Slovenia and to reach Slemenova Špica you’ll need more-less 1,5h. With the same way up and back, you will not lack a chance to admire the views.

Considered a moderate hike, there’s no major difficulties except the constant ascent. That’s why I would recommend it for older children, aged 10+; I also saw many small babies in the carriers.

The best season to hike Slemenova Špica is after the winter and snow melts, from May till November. Due to its relatively easy trail, it can also be fun in the winter months. Take care on the rocks, which reminds me on the Mediterranean hike like Mosor near Split.

In June, we saw many beautiful flowers on the trail such as dwarf alpenrose/dwarf rhododendron or the mountain avens.

Our Experience on Slemenova Špica

We started the trail around 8h, waiting for the opening of the restaurant hut because of the things left. On the way back, we saw many more people than it was uphill. With the sunny weather, we enjoyed the Alpine atmosphere in Slovenia.

As the summit of Slemenova Špica is short in size, we didn’t spend much time there. Below the summit, the meadows unveiled to us a refreshing time to rest and take some picnic time.

The incredible views took our attention the most as every corner had its surprises.

Photography Tips for Hiking Slemenova Špica in Kranjska Gora

Almost the whole day is great light for capturing beautiful shots, but I would recommend the morning.

At the summit of Slemenova Špica, you can enjoy the 360° panoramic views, delighting you as you turn everywhere. This is the best place to catch stunning photos to keep in your hiking folder.

On the ascent, you can also have some pretty views that could become your profile images with the Alpine touch.

Stopping at the crossroad to Vršić will unveil the amazing rock formations as your photo background. Towards Vršić, it will take you another 20 minutes from the crossroad. Arriving at the crossroad takes about 45 minutes from the start.

You will not lack opportunities for beautiful captures during the hike, so expect to stop often.

Visit Zelenci Nature Park Afterwards

If you’re driving back towards Kranjska Gora after the hike, make sure to stop at Zelenci Nature Reserve.

Famous for its vibrant emerald-green spring and wooden boardwalks, it’s a peaceful place to visit. The visit only takes around 20-30 minutes, making it a perfect addition to your day.
