Paklenica, Croatia- The Ultimate Guide to the Hiking Paradise For All Levels

Nestled on the southern slopes of the Velebit Mountain range, Paklenica National Park is one of Croatia’s most spectacular destinations. Known for its dramatic canyons, towering limestone, diverse wildlife, the park attracts enthusiasts all over the world.

While visiting Paklenica back in April, the spring flowers were blooming in the snowy fields. This contrast between seasons made our visit especially memorable and offered a unique glimpse into the park landscape.

If you plan to explore Velebit mountain, Premužić trail is the most popular and long 46 km with stunning coastal views.

Not far from Zadar and Queen’s Beach in Nin is also the Canyon of the Zrmanja River, where every corner unfolds the marvelous views.

How to Get to Paklenica

Paklenica National Park is located very close to town of Starigrad-Paklenica, which is about 45 km from Zadar. The easiest way to reach the park is by car via the A1 motorway, followed by a short drive to the main entrance.

If you’re travelling without the car, the regular buses connect Zadar with Starigrad-Paklenica. Anyhow, having your own vehicle gives you more flexibility to explore the surrounding area and trailheads.

You can also hike to Vaganski Vrh starting in Veliko Rujno, where you can park the car.

Where to Stay in Paklenica

Starigrad-Paklenica is the best base to exploring the national park. The town offers a wide range of accomodation options, including appartments, guesthouses, campsites and small family-run hotels.

If you want to be closer to mountain spirit, stay in one of the several mountain huts inside the National Park. Staying close to the park allows for easy access to the hiking trail while also providing beautiful views of both the Adriatic Sea and the Velebit Mountain.

We stayed in Ramića Dvori, which is the furtherst of all and pretty simple. One official hut is bit closer, known as Planinarski dom Paklenica.

Ivančev Dom has a lovely pool to enjoy in the mountains, just a few steps further.

Starigrad-Paklenica is only 5 minutes by car and offers plenty of possibilities to stay near the sea.

Bluesun Holiday Village Alan has an amazing pool and stunning seaside views.

Hiking Toward Vaganski Vrh

While reaching the Summit, we were joking it’s Vegan Summit because it’s similar with Vaganski.

Our first day we dedicated to hiking toward Vaganski Vrh, the highest peak of the Velebit Mountain. We started from Veliko Rujno, where we parked our car near the pine forest. The trail initially led us through fragrant pine trees before opening up to breathtaking views of the Adriatic coastline.

As we continued climbing, we reached a mountain hut surrounded by countless blooming crocuses. Creating one of the most beautiful spring scenes of the trip seemed like visiting the popular Velika Planina in Slovenia.

Higher up, the conditions became more challenging. Parts of the trail followed rocky sections near steep drop-offs, which felt a little intimidating. Snow gradually became deeper, and we frequently sank into it as we walked.

Eventually, we reached a section where scrambling with our hands was required to continue toward the summit. With deep snow covering the route and a group of 18 people, we decided not to take unnecessary risks and turned back before reaching the top.

After returning to Starigrad-Paklenica for a well-deserved coffee break, we spent the evening hiking to our mountain hut in the Great Paklenica Canyon. It took us a bit less than two hours, making our way to the mountain hut while enjoying the park’s incredible scenery.

Except Veliko Rujno, it’s also possible to reach Vaganski Vrh from the Great Canyon of Paklenica.

Exploring Velika Paklenica Canyon (Great Canyon)

Velika Paklenica Canyon is the heart of the National Park and one of its most impressive attractions. Walking through the Canyon is a fantastic experience, even for non-hikers.

The trail follows a stream through a dramatic landscape of towering limestone cliffs, dense forests and crystal-clear water. With the sound of flowing water and the sight of the elegant rock walls, it was such a peaceful atmosphere.

Our second day was originally planned around a hike to Anića Kuk. However, after learning more about the trail’s difficulty, I decided to skip the climb. Instead, we spent the morning wandering through the canyon and enjoying the sound of the stream. With our coffee in hands, we were captivated by the peaceful atmosphere.

Anića Kuk- the challenging peak in Paklenica National Park

Anića Kuk is the most iconic cliff in Paklenica and one of Croatia’s premier climbing destination. Rising more than 300 metres above the canyon floor, it attracts climbers from all the world. Even if you don’t pln to climb, seeing the view from above is similar to Veliko Rujno. It’s an unforgettable experience but remember that you’ll need to climb with your hands and legs while the rocks fall.

Paklenica offers much more than its most famous attractions. Adventurous hikers can explore Mala Paklenica Canyon (Small Canyon) or continue deeper into the mountains. Whether you’re looking for an easy walk or a challenging mountain adventure, Paklenica has something for everyone.

Other Hiking Trails in Paklenica National Park

While Velika Paklenica Canyon and Vaganski Vrh are among park’s most popular attractions, let’s dive beyond the surface.

Mala Paklenica Canyon (Small Canyon) offers a wider and more remote experience, with narrow passages, rugged terrain and fewer visitors.

Manita Peć Cave offers an amazing trail for those looking for a shorter hike with a rewarding destination.

For those seeking a shorter walk, the Paklarić Trail leads to the remains of Paklarić Fortress, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The panoramic views make it a rewarding option for families and casual hikers.

Pljeskarica Trail is another interesting route, which takes hikers through diverse landscapes with stunning views. It’s a great choice for visitors who like to enjoy a quieter hiking experience.

These trails showcase the incredible variety of landscapes within Paklenica National Park beyond the main canyon. Explore more about hiking trails in Paklenica here.

How Did I Feel In Paklenica

Paklenica surprised me in the best possible way, I loved the contrast between the rugged mountain landscape and the Adriatic coast. It’s something you rarely get to experience in one place.

Walking through pine forests, spotting colourful crocuses in bloom and admiring the dramatic cliffs made me feel completely immersed in beauty. Passing by the Great Paklenica Canyon, all in white, poured all the elegance of the hiking experience.

Even though we didn’t reach the summit of Vaganski Vrh, I never felt disappointed. The journey itself was the highlight, from the incredible views to the constantly changing scenery along the trail.

What I enjoyed the most was simply slowing down and appreciating the small moments. Noticing a bigger rock in the Great Paklenica Canyon was a great practice to substitute the higher picture. Paklenica is a place I would happily return to explore more of its trails and hidden corners.

On The Way Back- A Quick Stop in Modrići Village

Before driving along the Majstorska Road, we made a short stop in a tiny village of Modrići. Best known as the birthplace of Croatian football legend Luka Modrić, he is probably the most famous Croatian.

We took a few photos next to the old stone house and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. It’s a simple but meaningful stop that offers a glimpse of the culture touch in the Velebit region.

Tulove Grede- One of Croatia’s Most Spectacular Viewpoint

On the way back from Paklenica, we couldn’t miss a stop at the fascinating rock formation in Croatia- Tulove Grede. Located along the historic Majstorska Road, these dramatic limestone peaks rise sharply above the landscape. Creating an almost otherworldly scene, it’s such a perfect stop for photographers.

It’s easy to understand why this unique location captured the imagination of filmmakers for the legendary Winetou.

The panoramic views of the Adriatic coast before Tulove Grede are absolutely breathtaking. Even a short visit is enough to appreciate the raw beauty and timeless atmosphere of this remarkable place.

Final thoughts

Paklenica National Park is a place that reminds you that the journey is often more rewarding than the destination.

Although we didn’t reach the summit of Vaganski Vrh due to the snowy conditions, the experience was unforgettable.

Whether you’re looking for a challenging mountain adventure or a peaceful walk between the rocks, Paklenica will satisfy every level.

If you’re planning to visit Zadar, don’t miss Paklenica. Pack your hiking boots, take your time and enjoy every step. You might not always reach the summit, but you’ll leave with memories that last far longer than any view from the top.

Paklenica looks absolutely stunning. I love places where you can combine mountain scenery, dramatic canyons, and coastal views in the same trip. The photos of the blooming crocuses surrounded by snow must have been incredible. Turning back before the summit was the right call too—those mountain views are never worth taking unnecessary risks. Thanks for sharing this beautiful guide to one of Croatia’s hiking gems!

We visited Paklenica last year and really enjoyed our hikes there. In addition to the great hikes, I really liked seeing the hummingbird moths in the area (in fall).

We have visited Croatia by cruise ship but always wanted to go back for a longer stay. We thought about spending time by the water. But it looks like we should try something like Paklenica for hiking. Good to know there are some paths for those who are not so good hikers.

What a beautiful and helpful guide! I really appreciated how you balanced practical trail details with your personal experience. Your honesty about turning back before reaching Vaganski Vrh was such a good reminder that good judgment is part of responsible hiking. The blooming crocuses against the lingering snow must have been incredible, and you’ve definitely inspired me to add Paklenica to my Croatia list!

Pakleniva is the kind of place I would love to visit. The scenery looks amazing and diverse. Good call on turning back from the summit. It will always be there for another day. And as you say, it’s about the journey, not the destination.
