03.04.2026.

One of the city hikes that was absolutely breathtaking is Monte Pellegrino, organized by the Italia Nomad Fest in March. The trail is not very challenging, but enough diverse to give you the feeling of discovering something new.

Passing through the Mediterranean terrain in spring and refreshing pine trees, we had the feeling that summer is already here.

It’s one of the trails, where the goal is not seeing the views but to enjoy everything in between. From the castle in the distance, spring blooms, cave church and enchanting beach views- it’s so worth it. Check my Instagram reel and get a better impression.

Monte Pellegrino is a stunning place to include in your Sicily itinerary, and unmissable for families. If you have more time after Sicily, Puglia is not far to unveil its delights.

How to come to Monte Pellegrino

Monte Pellegrino is located just above Palermo and you can easily reach it from the city center. You can even come by bus n.812 from Politeama to the beautiful Santuario Santa Rosalia. From this cave church, there’s a 30-minute walk to the fascinating viewpoint.

At the start of the Pilgrim way, in the bottom of Monte Pellegrino, is the most common ascent. Here you’ll find the monument Scala vecchia and the cozy straight road going up.

All the major paths are well marked, making Monte Pellegrino easily accessible.

It’s a natural escape from the city, literally at the grasp of your hand.

Monte Pellegrino- History & Meaning

Monte Pellegrino is not only a mountain above Palermo, but a place with a great historical and spiritual meaning. Ever since ancient times, it’s considered holy with Santa Rosalia, the protectress of Palermo, having the most important role. At one cave, she lived as a hermit and from that moment became the symbol of Palermo.

That’s why Monte Pellegrino is not only a hiking spot, but a place for pilgrimage. Today this combination of nature, history and spirituality can be felt at every step of the mountain.

“Acchianata” is the name of the pilgrimage route, given by locals. Covering 7,8km, it starts with a winding stone road.

Castello Utveggio above Palermo

One of the most recognizable buildings lying on the cliffs of Monte Pellegrino is Castello Utveggio. This castle, built in the Neogothic style, looks like it’s taken from a fairy tale. Offering a stunning view to Palermo, it’s impressive seeing the pink castle on your hike. Accessing the castle is free, but requires a reservation.

Though it doesn’t have the classical palace function, it’s one of the most stunning places to take photos in Palermo.

During the hike, you can see it from a distance, looking almost unreal. This visual moment gives an adequate charm to the whole ascent. Contrasting the mountain, Castello Utveggio is an elegant invitation to explore Monte Pellegrino more deeply.

Views of the Stadium Renzo Barbera

The first „wow moment“ unveils upon arriving at the viewpoint, seeing the Stadium Renzo Barbera and Castello Utveggio. Such marvelous views let us discover the venue of Italia Nomad Fest from the air, Villa Niscemi.

Seeing this view blends three worlds in one cadre- sports, history and sea. Between the unlimited greenery, the stadium sparkles with new energy. It’s a place to pause the day longer than planned and only observe. Trying to catch the whole scene gives a real value to this hike. To this viewpoint, you would need about 1,5h from Scala Vecchia.

Santuario Santa Rosalia- Cave Church

After the viewpoint, the path leads us further to one principal point of Monte Pellegrino- the cave church. Though looking like a real church from the outside, it unfolds the magic inside. Having a very special energy, it’s a simple but powerful place.

There are no crowds or noise, only the stone, nature and silence. It’s this simplicity that created peace and respect to the holy place. This gives the impression of being blend with nature, following the mountainous shape.

You will see many souvenir stand around and a few cafes to rest from the hike. Having a short pause rewards you not only physically but mentally after the final hike.

We walk from the Stadium Viewpoint about 1h to the wonderful cave church. You can skip the Stadium Viewpoint and hike straight to the church, which will save you about 30 minutes.

Belvedere of Monte Pellegrino

About 30 minutes walking on the asphalt road from Santuario Santa Rosalia lies the most rewarding viewpoint of Monte Pellegrino. Before the Santa Rosalia monument and the stunning beach view, you’ll see the soft meadow views. Seeing the sea, islands and mountains in the distance will make you stand in awe for longer.

This panorama looks almost incredible, where you naturally unveil the silence and observe. You can feel how the whole route is so diverse and all the changes of the landscape.

It’s exactly this final moment that gives the feeling of reward for your every step. Here, Mount Pellegrino shows its best version. It’s a simple hike with the views that remain long after you come back.

Palermo- how to experience the city

Palermo is a city that blends history, culture and the chaotic Mediterranean energy. Exploring the most imposant highlights of the city center includes the beautiful Cathedral, Theatro Massimo and the vibrant streets. My explorations mostly start at the crossroads of the happening- the beautiful square Quatro Canti. Here, you can often hear street music and pause to take in the incredible colours that shimmer from the souvenir shops.

At the incredible markets you can feel the real rhythm of Sicily and the most famous one is Mercato Ballaro. Palermo is a combination of architecture from various times and styles, from Arabic to Baroque. This ideal connection of urban life and natural escape to the beach is inevitable for Palermo.

If you’re looking for a stunning beach to relax near Palermo, don’t miss the beautiful Mondello. Lying below Monte Pellegrino, it amazingly completes the circle.

Staying in Ostello Bello made the Palermo experience even more alluring.

My one week in Palermo

Palermo surprised me already on the first day, this is a city that’s neither clean or predictable. At the same time, it’s so elegant, which has an incredible charm. One week during Italia Nomad Fest passed with several guided walks, which made it more than just a festival. Stopping at almost every souvenir shop was irresistible, realising how colourful Palermo is.

One of the wonderful places to discover in Palermo is Orto Botanico, a calm green oasis. It’s a small garden filled with palm trees, cactuses, oranges, which gives a complete contrast to the city chaos.

Palaces of Palermo & Architecture That Tells Stories

Palermo is a city of palaces, how surprising is that? Each of them has its own character and particularly impressive is Palazzo dei Normanni. With the famous Palatin chapel, it’s one of the oldest European palaces. The elegant Palazzo Pretorio, now functions as a city hall is surrounded by the beautiful fountain of the same name.

You’ll discover many hidden Baroque facades by chance while walking around.

The city is actually an open-air museum with changing architecture between Arab, Norman and Baroque influences. Nothing is really perfectly restored so everything looks so vibrant and authentic.

Italia Nomad Fest- experiencing the community

Italia Nomad Fest was an opportunity to experience travel, people and ideas, blending with the city. Placed in the beautiful Villa Niscemi, it brought people all over the world. We learned about various co-living places and how to be more efficient while organizing your business.

What made it really special was the community atmosphere. Having your own rhythm while balancing something bigger is a way to realise your goals.

Beetcommunity

During the whole Italia Nomad Fest, the strong community feeling was present, connecting city with the festival vibes. One of the events included a little party in the Beetcommunity, a regular potluck evening.

Beetcommunity is a co-living place, covering a lot of weekly events to gather locals and nomads. The organizer of both, the Beetcommunity and Italia Nomad Fest, was Palermo’s incredible soul- Marco Traina.

Having a wonderful garden, the Beetcommunity is an unbeatable example of a co-living lifestyle.

For me, visiting the Beetcommunity was a highlight of Italia Nomad Fest and inspired me to incorporate its principles.

These places give something beyond the touristic attractions- a way to experience a city that is connected, spontaneous and real.

Final thoughts

Hiking on Mount Pellegrino unveiled incredible views and showed a hidden side of Palermo. Mount Pellegrino was a complete contrast to the city- silence, nature and views that reset the thinking.

What I love the most was the feeling that a journey like this is not about the place, but about the way to experience it. When you slow down and notice the details, people and atmosphere, everything gets a deeper meaning.
