Mosor mountain- hiking with the fabulous views of Split and islands

19.10.2020.

Sveti Jure is conquered but not the one that is the second highest peak in Croatia. That is at Biokovo mountain where skywalk still waits for me. Still, the path was very tough with 8-10 hours of walking at the stepping stones. I admit, I didn’t know where is Mosor before applying to this trip as I needed the weekend away so badly. Hiking was so worth of it as the views are fabulous. Town of Split in another clothes surrounded by all islands that you can imagine was one of the best seaside views I saw. I love that Dalmatia region spreads itself on the palm of my hand or as the song says Dalmatia in my eye.

The spectacular view towards Split & Marjan hill from Mosor

About Mosor

Mosor is located 20 minutes by car from Split, it stretches from Split to Omiš. Sveti Jure (1319m) is the most picturesque viewpoint where the little stone chappel decorates its way. At this point eye can reach everywhere: mountain Biokovo, Omiš with its bays, canyons of river Cetina, Sinj with its green oasis, fantastic views of island Brač, Hvar and Šolta and Split in all its splendor. You can see forrest Marjan of Split like the separate island blooming in the view.

Its highest peak is Veliki Kabel (1339m), the one that I didn’t reach the second day. It’s the typical stone path that creates the way. Names of the other peaks vibrate the lucky towns: Ljubljan, Debelo Brdo (Fat Hill- the peak that’s traditionally conquered every New Year’s by the local mountaineers).

Following the way from mountain hut to Sveti Jure fabulous view don’t stop and the first rest point is the little shelter house. Fields of sage fill the air with exquisite fragnances, immortelle adds to the charm. Wide trees of pomegranate give the feeling of relief and happiness.

Steppy stones make the path twisty but the forrest full of moss creates the magic atmosphere.

Finally, Sveti Jure- 4 hours away from mountain hut.

Mountain hut at Mosor

Mountain hut is located 45 minutes walk from the parking place, it’s the cozy stone building run by the family but with no warm water to shower and very low phone/Internet signal. Can you imagine how it is built? Only five minutes from the mountain hut fabulous views of the islands can be seen.

Dolac viewpoint is on the half way.

We admired the yellow house at the clear hill just across our views and the islands. Later we found out it’s an observatory to watch the stars. It’s reachable by car and many journalists come chasing the photos. Wow, we have a reason to come the second time. Don’t miss Solin and Klis if you’re around.

Bus is also available from Split to Gornje Sitno where is the parking place.

What to expect at the journey

We arrived exactly at midnight. Long journey took the rain away, one van and a car are ready with the enthusiastic mountaineers from all over Slavonia, not just one town. We met many locals and admired their decision to just come and go.

First day from sunrise (almost) to sunset speaks with the poesie of islands and gratitude that we chose this hiking point. Though the way down was harder than up as the stepping stones made their rules, the weekend hike was very worth it.

Dinner was ready and the funny sign above the kitchen everybody wanted to picture: „Everything is eaten“. We didn’t plan it but the lunch was also possible so why not take a plate of warm beans. I didn’t as I still had sandwiches but it was a sudden decision for everyone.

The weather forecast was changed luckily to us as the rain was approaching. The whole journey back was accompanied by the rain.

All in all

Rarely is Split seen from the aerial view but it’s so much wort it. Hiking to Mosor is not a usual tourist attraction but opens new perspectives.

Mosor is the tough mountain filled with steppy stones but offers magical views to Split and islands Brač, Hvar, Šolta and others. This guide will show you Split in another clothes and atmosphere where mediterrean scents fill the air. #hikingcroatia#splitcroatia#mountainandsea

Our daughter traveled within Croatia a couple of seasons ago and loved it. We have definitely added it to our “Must Travel To Next” list from BC Canada as soon as it is safe to do so once again. Great post and suggestions. 🙂
