Vransko Lake Nature Park is one of Croatia’s most fascinating natural areas, yet it remains overshadowed by the famous beaches. As the largest natural lake in Croatia, it offers peaceful walking trails and spectacular viewpoints.
Recognized as one of Croatia’s most important bird reserves, Vransko Lake is home to over 250 bird species. Attracting wildlife enthusiasts, it’s a stunning place to enjoy a boat ride and absorb a slower pace.

Where is Vransko Lake & How to Get There
Vransko Lake Nature Park lies between Zadar and Šibenik, just a short drive from the Adriatic coast. Although the lake stretches for over 13 km, visitors can access different parts of the park at the three main entrances.
Prosika entrance near Pirovac is perfect if you want to hike to the famous Kamenjak Viewpoint.
Crkvine entrance near Pakoštane is the best choice for birdwatching, only 2 km away from the town. Thanks to its wooden boardwalks and ornithological reserve, it’s the best point to observe the birds.
Kamenjak Viewpoint is the third entrance, which is the easiest to reach by car.
Having a car- which you can rent the easiest in Zadar– is the coziest way to visit Vransko Lake, though Pirovac and Pakoštane are great stations without a car.
My First Visit to Vransko Lake With the Ornithology Course
Many years ago I visited Vransko Lake during my ornithology course. We did a boat ride but unfortunately my memory faded and I don’t remember many details.
Returning recently felt like discovering the park all over again, this time with a fresh perspective for all it includes.
The Ornithological Reserve is the most valuable part of Vransko Lake, where many rare and endangered birds find their home. Thanks to its extensive reed beds, shallow waters and diverse ecosystems it provides an ideal resting place for many birds.
Vransko Lake is one of the largest swamps in Europe, together with fascinating Kopački Rit in Croatia.
At Crkvine, you’ll find the educational trail „The Birds of Vransko Lake“, which takes about 600 m. For the whole trail, you’ll need about 40 minutes and you can even rent a pair of binoculars, MTB bikes or an electric boat. There’s even an adrenaline park at the Crkvine entrance.
Hiking to Kamenjak Viewpoint
I started my hike from the Prosika entrance, but many people come by car as the easiest way. Walking for more than 2h under the hot Croatian Sun, the beautiful views followed me along the way.
There’s very little shade on the way, so I would definitely recommend visiting in spring and autumn.
Luckily, when I reached the upper crossroad, a friendly local offered me a lift for the final stretch to the viewpoint. It was a welcome break after walking in the heat.
Birdwatching at the Pakoštane entrance
If you’re mainly interested in birdwatching, the Crkvine entrance near Pakoštane is the place to visit. It’s only about a 20-minute walk to the ornithological reserve from the main crossroad in Pakoštane at Plodine. Here, the wooden boardwalks and observation hides allow visitors to quietly watch birds in their natural habitat.
While you might spot birds elsewhere around the lake, they’re much easier to observe from ornithological reserve.
After you visit, don’t miss the chance to explore Pakoštane, a charming seaside town known for its crystal-clear sea. Pakoštane is the perfect place to cool off after spending time exploring the nature park. You can only rent a bike here at Pakoštane entrance.
Shorty About the Pretty Town of Pakoštane
Pakoštane is a lovely town, where the sea has incredibly blue colours unlike the nearby Pirovac with its greeny waters. Surrounded by several islets, you can admire the scenery and take lot of beautiful photos.
Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and Vransko Lake, Pakoštane unfolds the best of both worlds. Wander through its cobblestone streets, enjoy a coffee by the waterfront or take a refreshing swim in the turquoise sea.
If you’re staying in Pakoštane, you can take advantage and book a trip to Kornati or Telaščica Nature Park. With its laid-back atmosphere, Pakoštane makes an excellent addition to any Vransko Lake itinerary.
Visit Pakoštane Pine Beach Resort & its private beach
Pakoštane Pine Beach Resort is a unique place to stay near Vransko Lake. Stretching in a fragnant pine forest, the resort offers a relaxed, boho atmosphere. With plenty of walking paths that beautifully blend into the surrounding nature, it’s such a cozy stay.
Inspired by the French owner who built the resort, it developped in such a wonderful gem.
Even if you’re not staying overnight, you should visit its beautiful beach. For day visitors, there’s an entrance fee but you’ll enjoy such a peaceful setting.
It’s an ideal place to unwind after exploring Vransko Lake and relax in its crystal-clear water and natural shade.
Explore Pirovac & its stunning views
If you prefer an authentic Dalmatian town over a busy tourist resort, Pirovac is well worth a visit. Its charming cobblestone streets, relaxed waterfront promenade create an atmosphere of slower pace.
One of the town’s most popular beaches is Lolić Beach, with lovely beach bars and dreamy sunset spots by the sea.
For a scenic walk, follow the Makirina Bay Promenade. This peaceful coastal trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking both Vransko Lake and the Adriatic Sea. Along the way, you’ll also come across a sculpture of a local turtle. It’s a fun little landmark that instantly reminded me of Koh Tao in Thailand, an island famous for its sea turtles. Also, make sure to stop by the Pirovac swing, one of the town’s most photogenic spots. Overlooking the sea, it’s especially beautiful at sunset. When the sky turns shades of orange and pink, it creates the perfect end of a day spent at Vransko Lake.
Final thoughts
Vransko Lake Nature Park might not be as famous as Croatia’s other national parks like the stunning Plitvice, but that’s what makes it so special.
What I love the most about Vransko Lake isn’t just one viewpoint or one trail- it’s the variety of experiences.
One moment you’re overlooking Croatia’s largest natural lake, the next you’re swimming in crystal-clear Adriatic sea. If you’re travelling through northern Dalmatia, don’t rush past Vransko Lake on your way to somewhere else. Slow down, explore its hidden corners and let this peaceful bird paradise show you a different side of Croatia.
