The world of waterfalls- hidden gems in Istria, Croatia

01.06.2020.

Ideas for the relaxing weekend getaway can be picked up by the mountaineering club and you don’t have to limit unto one. Unfortunately this one didn’t come into action because of the rain but I succeded to do it next year with my new friends. Seven waterfalls of the river Mirna sound pretty attractive by itself but what I saw  were magical colours and unusual bridges. 13 km that will take 5 hours will pass like 1 hour.

What to see

The starting and finishing point is near the picturesque town Buzet which stands proudly on the hill, actually near the water suply of Buzet.

The first waterfall named Zagon is surrounded by the lake of 25 m.

The second one is the delicacy to the adrenaline lovers, the waterfall Bačva decorated with the swinging bridge. You may say I am brave but I just tried to cross it amazed by the beauty even before I came. The waterfall hides upon distance, then flushes into the azurre colours of the small lake. What a delight in the middle of the forrest, it’s not the only adrenaline nectar. Here’s where the ascent starts among the strong rocks of the trail. Excitement to see what’s next rises like the path before us.

The third waterfall is Vela peć (Big oven) which spreads highly up to 27 m but don’t be clumsy like me trying to reach it in adventurous way across the tiny rocks that cover the lake. Yes, I jumped and was totally wet!

The fourth one is Mala peć but we skipped it somehow. The eyes were allured with the rocks so high and the views of the town Buzet across the valley.

Wondering where we are through the refreshing forrest one member managed to visit the fourth waterfall. Making jokes of the waterfall so relaxing that we need to go back, finally we decided we will not enchanted by the news of our friend’s return.

Wow, can you imagine that the Napoleon bridge took its place here? Not by resemblance but by the fact that Napoleon ruled shortly in central Istria at the beginning of 19.century. Pretty stoned bridge deserves its place in the nature. When searching for it, the letters on the ground indicated the direction but somehow our thoughts were that we needed to cross the meadow and walk sometime. It was just a turning point to the bridge across the corner. If we were continued to walk, we wouldn’t notice it but we were walking on it. Wow, we made it!

The path leads further through the tranquile countryside enriched with the typical stoned houses and the villages Kuhari (Cooks) and Kotli. Wonderful colours of river Mirna sometimes interwine with other rivers like and the brook Draga.

At the point where the asfalt road starts the fifth waterfall nestled to the path that goes back to Buzet. The white stones where the river flows shine like diamonds through the waterfall near the old watermill.

The sixth waterfall Zelenščak hides in the forrest falling down on the fabulously coloured lake that you cannot come in front. What a feeling!

Soon we arrive to the seventh waterfall Grjok, one of the most beautiful after the bridge waterfall. The way the water shapes the colours is just magical. Imagine how it would be to come in the summer to take a bath!

On our way back the adrenaline bursts in the distance seeing the people climb at the rocks. Questions like how they came in the middle of nowhere at all pop out without answer. It’s officially the place designed to do rock climbing.

What we thought will be 2-3 hours turned into 5-6 hours as we didn’t read the preparations and voila- we’re back of our circular route enjoying the views of Buzet.

Tired but refreshed we’re ready for the eighth waterfall but unfortunately we find out it appears only in the rainy times. Now we’re happy for the rain. It is the waterfall Sopot, the highest one in Istria- actually, 30 m. It’s located near the village Čiritež.

Still we don’t feel enough in our search of waterfalls as we stop by at another waterfall that mesmerise the views. Zarečki krov is the waterfall as well as the cave. It’ located only 3 km from the town Pazin but well known to the locals as the place of swimming and refreshment. The valley of mills finds its way along the river and who knows, maybe an idea for some future excursion. Some tours are organised here.

All in all

Istria captures by its beauty, but that it can be so beautiful I didn’t know. Her magic is ancient, her nature rooted in the soft, picturesque towns and villages. Let yourself explore more, dive into the heart of the roads beyond the main routes and just enjoy the colours.

You should definitely visit Plitvice lakes and waterfalls and Velebit mountain.
Zadar is a lovely town at the coast with some nice views of Velebit.
Any of the islands would do great specially Hvar. Istria is also a good choice
full of the hills. If you visit Opatija, you can go mountaineering at Učka
and catch some nice views.. and this town is so majestic..
