18.05.2020.

Only 20 minutes by train from Venice lies another magical town filled with canals. Walls that surround it immediately enchanted me with the medieval colours. The gate to the walls speak the story of independence as once there were 12 gates to the walls. Treviso is also home to some rewarded clothes brands like Benetton, Sisley, Diadora, Lotto sport Italia.

What to see and do

Roaming around canals

Not only you will find canals, but some pretty decorations in the water or even the water wheel. Three canals Cagnan, Sile and Botteniga make these alpin rivers the main force of the town. Just like Venice the house rise on water and make you wonder how is this possible.

Piazza dei Signori

Red coloured brick everywhere- doesnโ€™t it look like a place from paintings? It surely is this main square built at the end of 12. century with the high tower and arcades that take you into another world. That is Palazzo dei Trecento where now resides the municipal council and some artistic expositions. The main street Via Calmaggiore knocks like the ancient river into this medieval heart.

City walls

Who doesnโ€™t like exploring the ancient walls at the new town? Here the two most impressive gates will join you, Porta Sant Thomaso and Porta Santi Catherina. The entire city is all surrounded by walls, something like that I only saw in Lucca in Tuscany and Dubrovnik. All the way from 15th century walls stand when Treviso came under Venetian Republic. What we admire now, once were man made canals.

Walking around Sile river

Sile river doesnโ€™t offer only a pleasant walk but the soul of the city. As the river itself springs around Treviso, the Natural park arises to marvel your eyes with the villas, forrests, lakes, various animals.

Peschiera or fish market

I saw that mermaid in the river but I didnโ€™t know it was fish market. Once there were three small islands, now only one. Once the fishermen from Burano were selling their fish.

Treviso cathedral

As it looks rather like the theatre or the city hall this cathedral of five green domes also invokes the feeling of the roman temple. Itโ€™s rich with various artwork and frescos.

Fontana delle tette

Play a little game of finding the treasure of Middle Age. Hidden at the courtyard of one shop at the city centre delights this unusual sculpture. Once the wine poured from the womans breast, not the water. Can you imagine? But not always, only in the autumn. The tradition from 16th century broke with arrival of the new version in 1989.

Talking tree park (Parco degli alberi parlanti)

Unfortunately I havenโ€™t visited this place as itโ€™s quite away from the centre. It covers the public park of Villa Margherita and some pretty unusual sculptures.

Night life

As I spent only one evening in Treviso with my new couchsurfing friends, the proper destination was a pretty little bar. Though small, all the people were outside and it was bursting with life. The magic of Italy is found at totally unexpected place. My recommendation- Treviso centre is small, explore on your own.

Explore the beautiful villages

If you yearn for more medieval magic, Treviso has but also its surroundings. I havenโ€™t been but I will surely come back. Itโ€™s not the reason not to share my discovery.

All in all

Though Treviso cannot overshadow its big sister Venice, itโ€™s very worth a visit. The medieval rhythm of the streets, rivers that melt with the nature, decorations through the canals will make the magic flow.

I have been to Venice, but I have never heard of Treviso. It looks lovely. I will have to add it to my itinerary next time Iโ€™m in Italy, especially since itโ€™s so close to Venice and has so much to do.

What a lovely place Treviso looks to be! I love finding smaller towns to explore, and this one seems to fit that bill. I also love all the statues around, the one with the woman made me laugh!

    Thanks for sharing!

The architecture reminds me of Florence if it was picked up and moved to the canals! Looks like a lovely place to explore.
