Visiting Tegernsee is a popular day trip from Munich, most often combined with the pleasant hike to Â
Wallberg. If you’re eager to find the mountain scenery with splendid lake views, Wallberg Summit will offer you a delightful experience. Easily reachable by cable car, many families decide to enjoy the
spectacular Bavarian beauty.
Wallberg is known as the home mountain of Munich, giving you a set of incredible panoramic views. With
an altitude of 1772m, Wallberg is especially enchanting during the autumn time.
Discovering the hiking opportunities will reward you in endless ways and Bavarian mountains have a treasure to offer. Covering only 75 km from Munich, Wallberg is your perfect escape from city’s hustle and bustle. The legendary Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also not far from Tegernsee, so count to visit the highest German peak Zugspitze and enjoy mountain paradise. Visiting Nymphenburg Palace in Munich is a way to absorb the city’s elegant nature.
Let’s discover the breathtaking beauty that Bavaria has the pleasure to live with.
How to reach Wallbergbahn (Wallberg cable car)
From Munich to Tegernsee by train
It’s only 1h ride from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Tegernsee so it’s a cozy way to reach the lake. The train
is usually full as many hikers tend to take this route.
You don’t need a Bayern Card to take this route as Tegernsee is already in the Munich zone. It’s a cheaper
way to get unlimited public transport covering the 24h, unlike the Bayern Card that starts at 9h.
Informing yourself directly at the Train Station will will ensure the most convenient way to get your ticket.
To reach Tegernsee you will need MVV Day Ticket for the Zone 9 and it costs 22€. Stamping your ticket is
necessary before entering the train. It’s a bit tricky as you cannot see the stamping machines on every
platform.
From Tegernsee to Wallbergbahn (cable car station)
Wallbergbahn station is the starting point of your hike, whether you go by cable car or by foot.
From the Tegernsee train station take the bus to Wallbergbahn, Rottach Eggern (number 9556, direction:
Klamm, Kreuth).
I started my journey from Munich at 9,00h taking a cable car up and hike down. Visiting the Tegernsee
town afterward and seeing some people swimming in October was fun to see.
About the Wallbergbahn (cable car)
The cozy journey of 10 minutes takes you close to the Wallberg Summit, making it easy for everyone. You
still need to hike to the summit for 30 minutes, though.
Every day from 8,45-17,00 is the working time of the cable car. The last cable car leaves at 16,30h.

About the trekking route
The hiking journey is straight all the way so you cannot miss the trail. Going up will take you cca 2,5h and down 1,5h. Seeing the lake view during your hike is possible only at the one stop until the top.
Passing mostly by the shadowed path makes your hike enjoyable during summer, though it’s so picturesque in autumn. At one point the trail branches into Summer (which is only 15 minutes shorter) and Winter route. Still being the same route, you cannot miss anything.
Walbergmoos restaurant also stands on the way, if you’re following the Winter path.
Visiting the summit
As you reach the cable car station at the top, it’s still not the summit. The picturesque beauty of this place will let you soak the atmosphere while you relax around.
There’s a little chapel that brings more panoramic wonders. If you continue a bit further, you’ll arive at the
Berghotel Altes Wallberhaus. At its terrace, you can enjoy the excellent views.
Among several other restaurants to enjoy coffee or local delicacies, the Panorama restaurant is the most famous.
Being just at the cable car station, it’s a lovely welcome to your Wallberg adventure.
Wallberg belongs to the Mangfallgebirge or Mangfall Mountains and the impressive views capture Setzberg, Risserkogel, Roßstein and other mountains.
Wallberg during the summer and winter
During the summer, the Wallberg area is a bit more vibrant with plenty of paragliders. The cows have also
their chilling moments, mostly close to the chapel.
In winter Wallberg offers the longest sledging route and tobogganing fun. It’s not advisable for small children though, but snowy landscape adds a lovely charm to Wallberg. The ski lifts don’t function on Wallberg anymore, but you can enjoy the route on Erlen and Glaslhang.
Discovering the Tegernsee
After the cozy hike, the beautiful town of Tegernsee awaits you at its promenades. During my visit in
October, the International Mountain Festival took place in Tegernsee.
Taking a boat trip or renting a boat will unveil you a picturesque scenery of this beautiful lake.
The wonderful restaurants, bars and beautifully painted architecture will accompany you through Tegernsee.
Olaf Gulbransson Museum dedicated to Norwegian illustrator and painter is a marvelous place to visit.
In Gmund you can also visit a paper factory and mill, once also serving to the Bavarian royal court in Munich.
Visiting the natural cheese dairy in Kreuth is such a fun experience and you can enrich it with a guided tour.
Not only in the lake, you can enjoy swimming in Bad Wiessee in its healing waters. On the eastern shore of the lake visit the largest local brewery and try the typical Bavarian beer.
And now- 8 reasons to visit Wallberg
- The trail is pleasant and easy
- Fabulous lake views
- The whole mountain scenery is like painting
- Exploring and swimming in the lake
- Paragliding during the summer
- Cable car is for everyone
- It’s easy to reach from Munich
- During autumn the colours are stunning
Where to stay
If you’re not doing a day trip from Munich, I would advise to stay a few days on Tegernsee. In this way you’ll be more comfortable to hike up and down, visit lake and even some more trails.
More than one day will allow you to absorb the beauty of the lake beyond the Tegernsee town. Perhaps you can even swim and completely relax in the picturesque ambiance.

Final thoughts
When picturesque mountain scenery meets beautiful lakes, it’s an inevitable hiking dream. At least for me.
The Bavarian beauty scatters plenty of such places and Wallberg pleasantly invites all kinds of hikers.
If you’re planning a day trip from Munich, Wallberg is a gorgeous escape into nature. Combining it with
marvelous Tegernsee, you’ll feel needing to prolong your lake discoveries.
