1. Choose the right moment- one of the most useful sunset photo tips
Planning is the key to have awesome results, though sometimes you can be really lucky without a second thought. Arrive early so you can take advantage of every moment.
Not only the clear sky brings magic, but sunset holds many variations and types. Wonderful colours sometimes burst in front of the curtain that clouds create.
Not only does arriving early unveil the charm, but staying late. It’s the frame that brings fantastic images and panorama that stops the time. Sunset reveals the tranquility which melts any uncertainty or doubts.
Be ready for the golden hour that starts one hour before the sunset and enjoy the transformation. If it’s an unknown location, arrive enough early so you can have the time to explore around and find the best location.
2. Explore the locations
Location is essential when talking about sunset photography so take time to explore the most appropriate spots in advance. Think further about the composition that will make your images even more magical.
Knowing the position of the Sun means taking care of light and shadow and being prepared for it. Sunsets are always fabulous, no matter the location. The right location truly brings more charm, just like watching a marvelous theatre show. Fulfilling your summer bucket list is a way to discover fabulous sunsets.
In a new destination, use the mobile applications to help you find the best location. Photo Empheris or PhotoPills are the best examples.
Upon question- where did you see the best sunset- many of us have in mind the beach. In any water location, reflections create miraculous effects.
3. The rule of thirds
Composition is the key when creating a sunset photography, that’s why the rule of thirds should be in your focus. Dividing the image both horizontally and vertically, the power of photography shines like the sky full of stars.
Focusing on the sunset, the horizon gets at the bottom third. In the case where the foreground becomes primary and the sunset foggy, the horizon gets the top third in the plan.
The rule of thirds especially comes into focus when the Sun and the horizon are all that’s left.
4. Try different exposures
Though there’s no „right exposure“, the manual mode plays the game changer. The Auto mode doesn’t come as an option.
Choosing the different aperture and shutter speed sets the awesome panorama of photos. The underexposure results with richer colours. Experimenting is an essential rule and the best way to schedule the right mode is through bracketing. It means repeating the same photo, first with underexposure and then with overexposure.
The long exposure goes perfectly with the water elements making it more blurred. Auto-Exposure is a fantastic way to create stunning silhouettes.
5. Search for clouds
When you see a cloudy sky, you usually forget about sunset. It can totally surprise you the way that clouds bring the contra-effect and make fire in the sky. Something so magical happens rarely so be prepared to seek the treasure without warning.
The breathtaking colours play with the spontaneity of life just to amaze you moment after moment. Creating the natural theatrical show is the gift that life has to you to embrace the change. The sense of depth will fill all your senses just to make you wonder how the colours can be so incredible.
A cloudy sky is the perfect time to experiment with the long exposure. It brings dynamism and a complete story full of wonder. Different types of clouds add a special style to your photos so have enough patience to watch them move. The blue hour is sometimes particularly fantastic.
6. Don’t focus only on the sunset
Sunset can be only in the background for creating other types of photography. It’s a reason to put on the surface different portraits, landscapes, flowers or details in nature.
Golden light is the perfect time to catch amazing photos where sunset has its own magic.
7. Choose different perspective
What makes one photo unique are the details you add to the photo that become your artwork. A different perspective is the way that photo stands out from many similar ones. Water creates an incredible charm as well as a special frame.
8. Beach sunset images
The most iconic places to transmit the stunning power of sunset photography are the beaches. The marvel in which watercolours pour into the pure wonder are absolutely incredible.
While watching the sunset shine at the beach, time stops in numerous ways. It’s the natural way to bring closer the reflections of the day and life. The bliss that the beach sunset brings unveils the power of meditation and contemplation.
The beach gives thousand of opportunities to capture a new creative power. The golden hour in its entire nuances will transform your ideas into a way of life.
9. Experiment with the silhouettes
Silhouettes bring more emotion to your sunset captures and give lots of space to creativity. Only the dark image of the body unveils the power of magic and simplicity. It doesn’t have to be a person, silhouettes can be birds or any other objects.
Bringing action into focus is a way to have more fun with the photos. When people jump, plenty of new ideas can widen your horizons.
The charm of your photos rises with the appropriate frame (such as trees) or using additional items. Some of the most common are bubbles, flowy fabrics or water.
Shooting in manual mode
When capturing the silhouettes, the manual mode is the rule. You should also lower your ISO to prevent the noise of your images. Setting it to 8.0 or less gives you the possibility to have a clear subject and deeper space. The faster shutter speed also helps you to avoid blur. I would recommend starting with 1/125.
10. Focus on the composition
Composition is the essence of great photography, including your sunset images. It makes a fantastic artwork so count that magic comes from the awesome framing.
Having a full sky is the consequence of the stunning composition. Regarding sunset photography, the composition is challenging as your subject goes in the background. The foreground creates depth depending on your perspective or the angle you’re using. During the sunset rule of thirds is very helpful. The perfect symmetry excludes the rule of thirds, as the subject comes in the center.
Which camera should you choose?
Though the cheapest smartphone can make miracles, you should invest in the camera to create professional photos. What’s special about full-frame cameras is their dynamic range. The main characteristic of a full-frame camera is its sensor size, which is largest in photography.
Another benefit of the full-frame cameras is the dark shadows.
Choose the right focal length
The wide-angle lenses make the most stunning images, which are usually in the range of 10-30mm. The Sun becomes pretty small with the wide-angle lenses and that’s why we need to zoom it. The preferred option is to use 200m lens or longer.
With a mirrorless camera there’s no danger of looking in the Sun, because the electronic viewfinder comes in point.
Final thoughts
Though it may seem easy, sunset photography requires perfecting your skills to create miracles. The unique image includes a proper light, frame, Sun’s position or lens fare.
Birds or boats will enrich your sunset story into a new dimension.

Thanks for sharing, I always try to compose the pictures that I take, esp using the rule of thirds – learnt this when doing A Level Photography at school. I do find sunset pictures sometimes trickly to take, as you have to use manal instead of Auto unless you have settings for it. Great tips 🙂
