Enchanting Rajasthan- colorful towns of India in one-week itinerary

The pink city, golden city, blue city, city of lakes- how long does it take to visit and explore Rajasthan? The large distance from the cities makes it hard to circle around all. I had about ten days and I had to skip Jodhpur (blue city).

I would say that the perfect itinenary would be two weeks but it’s the subject to change. Train and bus tickets can easily be managed few days before, preferably online. The land of kings is the most historical of India, fascinating and mysterious experience, the perfect place for kings. Such a delight!

If you decide to travel to the other side of India, discover Kolkata and its surprising heritage.

What to expect and how to plan your itinerary in Rajasthan

Where to start? Jaipur is only 4-5 hours away from legendary Agra. If you would be going to Pushkar, it’s only 2 hours by train plus ½ hour by bus.

Jaisalmer covers a long way by train from Jaipur, 12 hours, but golden town you cannot miss. From Jodhpur to Jaisalmer takes 6 hours by train and from Jaisalmer you can continue your way to Udaipur by bus of 10 hours. Buses are very comfortable, sleeping night edition with cozy beds will uplift your journey. Trains can be quite cold at winter so bring a blanket. My experiences of the first time in India bring magical country on surface and lovely people.

Jaipur- the pink town and capital of Rajasthan

Jaipur or Pink city is the largest city of Rajasthan with more than 3 milion citizens, nevertheless it’s a pretty walkable town. Pink colour of the town gives it an alluring note with its meaning of hospitality. It’s one of the cleaniest cities in India.

Hawa Mahal, the symbol of Jaipur

Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace) is one of the major sights, build from the pink sandstone. This majestic palace was built in 1799. by the founder of Jaipur and the poet king Sawai Pratap Singh with the main purpose to serve ladies to stay out of view when watching the street life. The design of the palace resembles to the Lord Krishna’s crown. This Rajput and Islamic building offers the best views of Jaipur.

City Palace and other sites in Jaipur

City Palace is the true sign of Rajasthan with its colours and hidden beauty. Within many buildings and courtyards, City Palace is lost in the charm. Don’t miss it like I did. Till 1949. it was an administrative centre, the place of cultural events.

Many, many other sights are worth seeing like Amber Fort and Palace (which is a bit out of town), Nahargarh Fort, Jal Mahal or Water Palace. Bazaar with its many shops is what makes Jaipur but if you visit some of the textile factories, you’ll get in the heart of unique production.

Jaisalmer- the golden town in Rajasthan

Jaisalmer or Golden town is the small town near the desert, immersed into golden images all around so you cannot be but enchanted. The fort is like the throne to the town where the tiny streets, shops and restaurants you have to explore by yourself.

Gadisar lake is on the main road, only 10 minutes by foot where you can make a boat trip also.

Bada Bagh and Vyas Chatari are places similar but so delight the same with the circular constructions and artistic feelings.

If you try to explore hostel in neighbourhood by chance, not only will you find a lovely and creative place but welcoming hosts. Just all the golden buildings sound like a fairy-tale, as well as the chance to sleep in the golden hotel.

Thar desert near Jaisalmer

Desert near Jaisalmer or Thar desert offers nothing but peace where sunsets play their melodies. Sun was strong so nothing from coldness even in the night, but many blankets help.

Udaipur, the Lake town in Rajasthan

Udaipur or Lake town with all the rooftops offers the amazing views of this town in white. City Palace is one of the most enchanting palaces in Rajasthan, the boat ride at lake Pichola under the additional price will give you the special indian sunsets. It’s just lovely roaming around its hilly center, exploring the typical shops and marvellous architecture.

Saheliyo Ki Bari Garden is a little away from the town but don’t hesitate- it’s small but fantastic indian decorations will make the way. Many people inside will not allow your photos to be your own.

Even the cable car is located in Udaipur within only 20 minutes from the center, don’t miss the views.

Final thoughts

When I heard about colourful towns, there was not a second thought. Fascinating Rajasthan will leave you breathless and will make you wonder how little it takes to be fulfilled. Maybe only one colour.
