Ohrid Lake is one of the oldest in the world lying on the border between Albania and North Macedonia. It’s a true gem of south Europe, often described as Macedonian seaside. That’s why this picturesque place is pretty packed during summer. Every itinerary of North Macedonia should include Skopje and Lake Ohrid, at least.
Ohrid Lake shines with enticing beauty between stunning mountains and Natural Park Galičica. Enjoying the sunsets is a special priviledge that you shouldn’t miss here.
Ohrid is full of churches, 365 of them enlighten your way for every day.
Visiting the Old Town of Ohrid
Ohrid Town is one of the largest cities in Macedonia, but dwells in the picturesque atmosphere of a small town. Its cobblestone streets full of restaurants and bars make the perfect leisurely wander.
While in Ohrid, you may admire the fact that both city and lake belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Some of the nicknames of Ohrid are European Jerusalem (due to its many churches) or City of Lights. Its ancient name is Lychnidos, which literally means city of light.
The charm of Ohrid absorbs the cuteness of narrow lanes and specific houses. Its upper floors create asymmetry in relation to the lower ones, being a bit wider.
Church of St.John at Kaneo- the highlight of Ohrid
With the impressive views Church of St.John at Kaneo is unmissable point at Ohrid Lake. The high cliff of the location scatters the picturesque atmosphere. The panoramic images of the lake blend with the mountain. This is the most common picture postcard of Ohrid lake.
Dating back to the 13th century, the construction preceeded the Ottoman arrival. Though you cannot enter the church itself, the views are absolutely fascinating. The proximity of Kaneo beach gives it an attractive trump.
Tsar Samuel’s Fortress
Thar Samule’s Fortress stays in the Old town, at the top of the hill. I saw it while climbing to my hostel but never actually reached- I don’t know why. Definitely I would need a trip back to Ohrod. The medieval vibes from 13th century burst with the stunning views of Ohrid. The walls are so impressive and small entrance fee totally worth it.
The churches of Ohrid
As I said already, Ohrid deserves the title European Jerusalem. In the ancient times the city used to have 365 churches as it was the residence of the Archbishopric of Ohrid. This was an autonomous Ortodox church that rule between 1019 and 1769.
Though this number decreased nowadays, Ohrid is still abundant with churches.
The Church of St. Sophia is one of the exquisite examples, hiding in the Old town. The First Bulgarian Empire put the stone to this church, but it became mosque during the Ottoman Empire. Beautiful frescoes from 11-13th century fill the church.
Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon is a very pretty church, lying below Tsar Samuel’s Fortress. Its rich history pulls the roots to the 9th century. It also existed as mosque during the Ottoman Empire.
The sources of Biljana
Though I didn’t succed in finding them, this is a place that praises the traditional Macedonian song. The songs says that Biljana bleached the canvas. You can see the small waterfall which serves to the water supply in Ohrid. The nearby restaurant is a tranquil place where you can try authentic Macedonian and international cuisine.
Ohrid pearls
Totally surprising to see the most representative local product are the Ohrid pearls. Such a secret to reveal is just enticing as they’re too pretty and authentic. They’re made from local shells, to be precise from the plastica fish. It’s quite incredible that this pristine lake hosts about 200 endemic plants and animals.
The Talevs and the Filevs were the only two families in the recent 100 years producing them. The lovely shine comes from the secret emulsion.
Taking a boat trip on the lake
The most fabulous experience you can have on the lake is definitely taking a boat trip. I certainly missed it as I was only 2 days, but don’t make my mistake. It usually costs 20€ per person.
St. Naum Monastery
St. Naum Monastery is one of the iconic spots, which looks so picturesque. This impressive building amazes both inside and outside. Beautiful frescoes from 1806 enrich this complex. The whole monastery pulls the roots in the beginning of 10th century. St. Naum of Ohrid established the monastery in these ancient times.
As the monastery lies only 1 km from Albanian border, this area shortly belonged to Albania from 1912 till 1925.
Bay of Bones
The next point full of interest at the boat trip is a Bay of Bones. It’s a fascinating museum that takes you back in time. At this archeological compley you can explore the prehistoric time of Ohrid Lake. Wooden cottages that lie on the water are so lovely.
Bay of Bones is located between Ohrid and St. Naum Monastery.
Restaurants in Ohrid
Ohrid covers various palette of tastes and it’s easy to be vegan here. From traditional Macedonian food (gravče na tavče- beans of Macedonian) to pizza at every step, you won’t be hungry.
Treat yourself well with healthy breakfast and visit Fruitbox on the main street. They have the lovely choice of smoothies and cakes.
Instict is a fantastic place where you can enjoy wraps, beans and risotto of different kind. Traditional Macedonian meals are the rule at this exquisite place.
Kaj Kanevche is a place to try Macedonian delicacies and stunning fish dishes of Ohrid.
Restaurant Sveta Sofija (located across the historical church) has the fantastic local food, specially the trout and cheeses.
Otto Good Mood Food offers a pleasant choice of sushi and wraps with the lake view.
Where to stay at Ohrid Lake
I stayed in Sunny Lake Hostel, which was just uphill road from the centre. The tricky challenge was that it wasn’t the hostel from the pictures. Unfortunately, owner had to change the location because of Covid and costs. The one from the picture has the lovely garden and I hope it’s reopened again. Still, it was pretty full. Many people came without reservation like some cyclists.
Hostel & Cafe Mild is a new hostel in the city, just near the bus station. It properly looks like a hostel though a bit far from the centre- 3km.
Tino Hotel & Spa is a fabulous and affordable hotel in the centre of Ohrid. It’s quite large, located just near the lake.
Laki Hotel & Spa in Sveti Stefan offers the cozy accomodation with beautiful pool and beach.
Vila Bisera is a tranquil place in Lagadin with lovely pool and amazing views.
Hotel Alexandria in the centre of Ohrid is an affordable accomodation with the taste of luxury.
Final Thoughts
One of the oldest lakes is Europe is such an offbeaten destination. Its charm belongs to the cobblestone streets, unusual houses and amazing lake. Exploring the historical churches can be surprising adut. The gastronomical offer is very fullfilling and satisfies all tasted.
