EUROPE
Alsace, France, contributed by myself
The fairy tale vibes of the French region Alsace make it an ideal spot for couples. Particularly attractive during the Christmas time, the pretty towns and villages of Alsace are so inspiring to visit. The enticing decorations and delicious food are the magical way to experience winter wonderland of Alsace.
What to visit in Alsace
Starting with Strasbourg, you’ll admire the cozy atmosphere of Petite France, its canals and numerous markets. Enjoying the mulled wine or hot juices with your loved one will sparkle up the fairy tale even more.
Almost every street in the Old town bursts with cuteness while you soak up the festive presence. Let’s add the impressive Cathedral that blends perfectly with the surrounding shine.
Colmar is a fabulous pearl that unveils its charm in such an incredible way. The gingerbread houses are the delightful symphony that make Colmar so cute. Upon reaching the Petite Venice the allure of Colmar becomes even stronger.
Lovely villages like Riquewihr and Eguisheim will rise up the magic of your journey. Colourful corners and cheerful atmosphere will inspire you with heavenly moments.
Where to stay
I would recommend spliting your vacation in Alsace in both Strasbourg and Colmar. Staying in Colmar will give you the better option to visit nearby villages such as Riquewihr or Eguisheim. The romantic atmosphere of these villages is so enchanting so why don’t you choose to stay there.
Strasbourg- Hôtel & Spa Le Bouclier D’or– cute and elegant hotel in Petite France;
Colmar- Hotel Restaurant Le Maréchal – Les Collectionneurs– ancient hotel in the picturesque ambiance of Petite Venice;
James Vignoble Hôtel, Eguisheim– fabulous view and tranquil ambiance with te pool;
Prague, Czech Republic, contributed by Veronika Primm from Travel Geekery
Prague is a dream destination year-round but once its roofs and spires get covered with pristine white snow, its charm is almost hard to resist!
Visiting Prague in winter doesn’t guarantee snow, of course. If you come in December, the whole city is going to be dotted with Christmas markets and decorations. It’s an especially pretty time of year, and tourists know it. If you prefer fewer people to share Prague’s charm with, January and February become a lot quieter.
If you get cold, there are always enough cafés and restaurants to help warm you up until you’re ready to explore again. Within the Old Town, I can highly recommend the Choco Café at Liliová Street for a perfect mug of hot chocolate or coffee.
Where to stay & which romantic streets to search
The Hotel U Raka is an especially romantic place to stay in the New World in the Castle District. It’s located in a traditional wooden house and has a romantic, cozy feel.
Walking through the romantic streets of the Old Town at dusk, with the added bonus of fresh fallen snow, will stay in your memory forever. Other romantic areas to walk around are in Kampa, along the Vltava River, in the New World area, or within the Prague Castle complex.
Amalfi coast, Italy, contributed by Adri from Traveltipzone
If you are looking for romantic winter destinations, you’ll probably think of Italy, known for its romantic spots. Within Italy, the famous Amalfi Coast is especially recommended as a great destination even in winter.
The Amalfi Coast is one of those rare places in Europe that offers pleasant weather, blooming flowers, and a seaside atmosphere even during winter. Another advantage of visiting in winter is the opportunity to avoid the huge crowds common during other times of the year. Additionally, it’s not too hot for sightseeing, and accommodation can be more affordable.
There are numerous towns along the Amalfi Coast, but the most outstanding are Amalfi and Positano.
In Amalfi, a stroll can be a truly romantic activity, taking in the Duomo di Amalfi, the small streets, and the picturesque seaside.
In Positano, it’s worth taking a walk along Viale Pasitea. Here, you can enjoy breathtaking views, shop for local handmade products, and find wonderful restaurants. Additionally, it’s worth going down to the beach even in winter, at least for the fantastic panorama or a nice boat trip.
How to reach & where to stay
You can get to the Amalfi Coast from Naples, primarily by car or via local bus tours. The journey itself is quite exciting due to the winding, narrow mountain roads.The landscapes that greet you upon arrival are among the most beautiful in Europe.
If you decide to stay in the area, it is advisable to do so in these two towns. In Positano, we recommend Villa Fortuna guesthouse, and in Amalfi, the Terrazza Duomo hotel opposite the cathedral.
The Amalfi Coast is an idyllic choice for a romantic winter getaway. If you are in Naples or its surroundings, a visit there is an absolute must.

Shirakawago, Japan, contributed by Chloe from Chloe’s Travelogue
When thinking of a romantic winter vacation, walking in the winter wonderland is the first thing that comes to mind. Shirakawago Winter Light-up Festival in the Japanese Alps fits the bill.
Shirakawago is a UNESCO heritage village in the Hokuriku region of Japan. The tiny farming village in the mountain is a living museum with residents still living inside the 300-year-old Japanese farmhouses.
These traditional farmhouses – Gassho-zukuri – feature a unique thatched roof. In winter, the house covered in heavy snow looks like a gingerbread house from a winter wonderland. When the light switches are turned on at dusk, it creates a magical scene from a romantic fairytale village.
Winter Light-up Festival
The winter illumination typically takes place in January and February only on Sundays. The festival is open to a limited number of the public each day. And it is challenging to access this town from the major cities in Japan. So reserve your spot and arrange transportation only available during the festival early in advance. Staying at a lodging in the village is recommended, as this is the only way to secure an observatory ticket.
Whether traveling as a couple or family, visiting a remote mountainous town in Japan covered in snow will be a memorable romantic getaway in winter.
