Nestled in the shade of Pisa and Venice Livorno is a port city of authentic italian vibe. Though it’s not a holiday destination Livorno is a transit point on the way to Corsica, Elba or other islands. Livorno is located only 20 km from Pisa.
The city’s original purpose was to serve as a port way back in 1608. when it was built.
The highlight of visiting Livorno is its central spot filled with canals and medieval bridges. New Venice interwines with lovely forts and seaside magic.
What should be the focus of your visit to Livorno?
Terazza Mascagni
This charming terace is one of the loveliest sights of Livorno resembling the chess table. Covering wonderful seaside views it’s a popular promenade and relaxing spot.
The name comes from the amazing composer Pietro Mascagni and certainly deserves the poetic panorama. Encircled by the Livorno Aquarium and the famous seaside resort Bagni Pancaldi the elegant vibe comes to the surface.
It’s even more charming during the sunset.
Venezia Nouva
Numerous canals and medieval bridges shape the lovely neighbourhood of the nickname Venezia Nuova. Just across the Fortezza Nuova the ancient canals from 1600s interwine with the small sailing boats.
Fortezza Nuova
Amazing seaside fort built in the red brick once served against the pirate attacks. Together with the old fort it served the defensive purposes of Livorno. Its unique feature is that you can walk on the grounds.
Old fortress
Built in the early 1500s it stands at the entrance of the Medici port. Inside is placed small and lovely church of San Francusco.
Piazza della Repubblica
One of the most amazing squares of Livorno is this large historical point full of the soft colours. Its relaxing vibe interwines with the fabulous art galleries and severals restaurants. The fantastic view spreads over Fortezza Nuova, Quartiere Venezia and Fosso Reale or the main canal.
Orto botanico del Mediterraneo
This is a typical mediterrean garden located at the Museum of Mediterrean natural history of Livorno.
Livorno Aquarium
Turtles, sharkes and numerous fishes live at this treasure of underwater life. Â
Terme del Corallo
This abandonded building of the early 20th century was a popular and elegant spa resort until the Second World War. After the war it turned into the dance hall. Lovely location near the main train station gives another plus.
This beautiful edifice of Art Nuoveau or Stile Liberty was still not renewed.
Museo Civico of Giovanni Fattori
Elegant building encircled by fabulous gardens is located in the Villa Mimbelli. It contains the stunning collection of tuscanian art of 19th and 20th century.
Place to visit around Livorno
Castello de Boccale
Fabulous views of this cliffy castle are placed just south of Livorno, about 10 minutes drive. Nestled in a cove named the Cala dei Pirati it offers historical insights and relaxing swimming opportunities.
Built with the defensive purpose against marine attacks, later it was developed by the family Medici to get its final outlook in the 19th and 20th century. Nowadays it’s privately owned place and cannot be visited by public.
Cala del Leone
Cala del Leone is a lovely beach within 15 minutes drive near Livorno, popular by young people.
Calafuria coast
Stretching at the picturesque rocks you can visit here many hidden beaches, several campsites and beach resorts.
Castiglioncello
Sweet little town is a popular touristic destination, easily reachable by train. Inspired by many writers, poets and actors it allures with pinewood promenade and etruscian spirit.
Some of the amazing sights include Pasquini castle within the hill views and lovely park.
Conclusion
Livorno pays a visit with the historic sights like New Venice, charming Terraza Mascagni and exploring beyond the surface. Be sure to check out the surroundings specially Castiglioncello.

What a beautiful looking place! I can’t believe more people don’t know about this place as it looks absolutely beautiful. Venice is wonderful, but it’s nice to also visit other places less often visited by tourists. Castiglioncello looks amazing and Terazza Mascagni – that terrace! Lovely review, I missed Livorno when I visited Tuscany. Well we made it to the train station, but due to torrential rain we decided to return to our hotel in Pisa. After reading this, I hope to get another opportunity to visit in the future
