Island Brač, one of the largest islands in the Split archipelago, is famous by the fabulous beach Zlatni Rat. It’s quite surprising how every place bursts with elegance and flowers, especially during spring and early summer. Not only that, the cozy cobblestone streets are interwoven with soft colours and eternal magic.
Only 1 hour by ferry ride from mainland Split, this island is a treasure of its own. Upon visiting Split, the forest-park Marjan and its beaches offer the pure delicacy. Don’t hesitate to explore other islands nearby, such as the gorgeous Hvar.
Here’s what you can expect to see in the detailed guide:
1. Supetar
Supetar is the largest place on the island and the main ferry port. Fabulous views of Split and mountains will await you at the hill above the ferry port. Here, you can sit in supermarket’s caffe bars and enjoy it.
Actually, the main advantage of Supetar above all island places is the large and cheap collection of choice in the supermarkets of Lidl, Konzum and Tommy.
The center is pretty car-free where elegant cobblestone streets pour the simple magic. Many tiny streets around are filled with flowers specially bougenvilla.
The beaches of Supetar breath the crystal clear sea though sometimes it can be filled with brenches. Specially pretty is the beach Vela Luka just in front of the hotel Velaris & hotel Amor. Though it can be quite crowded during the summer.
I worked few months in the hotel complex Waterman which was full of bugenvilla and flowers but neighbour hotel Amor belonging to Bluehost was even more enchanting by flowers. Specially in June when lavanda rules.
2. Postira- cozy town at island Brač
Postira is a sweet place only 15 minutes away from Supetar that lives a special vibe of a small town.
It’s the place where I saw one of the best sunsets on island Brač. Hilly streets with typical green windows just magically spell the beauty with the cathedral in view.
The hiking trail towards Bol or Via Brattia within 140 km crosses many of the island’s lively and pretty places Supetar, Mirca, Sutivan, Bobovišća na moru, Ložišća, Milna, Bol, Sumartin, Pučišća, Škrip. In this circular road you can enjoy some of the most amazing beaches of Brač like Zlatni Rat; Farska, Murvica, Lovrečina, Smreka.
Hiking routes starting in Postira, island Brač
Little shorter hiking route starts in Postira towards Vidova Gora and Bol which takes only 22 km or 6h by walking. I would definitely love to try this one. Many of the historical and archeological monuments can be seen on the way which include:
– Mirje, the monastery complex from 6th century;
– dry-stone walls;
– few churches of historical meaning like St. Nicholas, St.John the Baptist;
– Veli Gažul- the hill only 70 m lower from Vidova Gora with the fantastic view of Brač and dalmatian mountains:
– korita, a portuding reef with 3 natural ponds in the rock;
– Vidova Gora- the highest peak of all dalmatian islands (778m);
Postira is a perfect place to spend your vacation as the few smaller hotels can be found here, shadowed promenade that leads to the beach Lovrečina.
On the way to Lovrečina stop in another bay and visit Caffe bar Trsteno.
3. Lovrečina Bay- a lovely sandy beach on island Brač
Lovrečina beach is one of the rare sandy beaches at island Brač. Just above the beach is the historical complex from 5th century which was once a monastery. Once a roman agricultural field, now it’s a ruin with the picturesque views and even some tombs.
Lovrečina bay is located 1h by walking from the centre of Postira.
4. Milna- Bay of thousand ships
Milna is known as the „bay of thousands ships“ because of its lovely marina. Rocky beaches a bit out of Milna are the best stroll at this peaceful place.
For those who would like to discover even more peace and ecological escape should visit Gea Viva. Only 15 minutes at the hill above Milna the german enthusiast Sabine Engelhardt has built her own paradise now offering many yoga classes.
5. Bobovišća na moru- awesome sunsets at island Brač
Nestled in the cozy bay this place is specially lovely at the sunset.
6. Pučišća- the cradle of stone artwork on island Brač
The picturesque bay shines above this sweet little place where stone dictates the life. This is where the famous artistic stone of Brač pulls its roots. The stonemason school elegantly decorates the vibe of Pučišća.
Settled at the northern point of island close to Bol Pučišća is definitely worth a visit. Its streets, stairs and flower-equiped-atmosphere just enchants.
If you would ask me, Pučišća can have the title of the most beautiful place at the island. Though Bol can easily take this reward by locals.
7. Bol and the majestic beach Zlatni Rat
The famous Bol deserves the discovery of Zlatni Rat beach and its incredible colours. Though a bit windy, Zlatni Rat is covered in calm and wavy corners at the same time.
8. The desert Blaca and Dragon Cave
The desert Blaca deserves the title of the desert because of its secluded position away from all natural sources. Settled between Bol and Milna it’s a wonder of nature and history dating back in 16th century.
Serving once as a monastery and observatory, now it’ only a museum. There’s not a direct road, the best way to reach this place is to park the car in Dragovod after passing Vidova Gora and then taking 30 minutes walk.
Hopefully I will visit it soon.
Dragon Cave
Dragon Cave is an artistic monument belonging to monastery all the way in 15th century. Located in the heart of Vidova Gora near the village of Murvica it can easily be reached on the way to Bol. It holds the ancient fairy tale legends.
Dominican monastery in Bol
This place offers the fabulous seaside views, colours and tranquile atmosphere. Founded in 1475. nowadays it holds museum and the bibliotheque with the rare books.
9. Škrip- the oldest place at the island
While searching for lavanda fields, I visited the lovely village of Škrip. Unfortunately, I didn’t find lavanda fields so my Provence stays a dream in June but Škrip totally enchanted me.
I guess with the seaside views on the hills they look pretty fabulus. I guess they’re located 1h of walking from the main road but I didn’t have a second chance to visit because of my busy schedule.
I was cycling towards Splitska along the cute little bays and you wouldn’t say they’re on the main road.
After asking people around where’s Škrip, I was intenteded to go up the hill but was so lucky that lady with the car gave a lift. Even putting my rented bike inside the car.
In Škrip you can visit Museum of Brač, also Museum of olive oil, see the ancient castle where people still live and even visit some artisan stuff.
Splitska village is a little port and popular swimming spot of locals.
10. Sutivan
Only 6 km from Supetar Sutivan is a place where quiet beaches will await you and more more clear the sea.
Hotel Lemongarden is a private place of 5 stars where guests can enjoy their privacy with the fabulous pool and gardens within the house all in stone. It’s placed in the centre of Sutivan.
Park Prirode Sutivan is a decorated place in the huge forrest where you can visit some animals and even the lavender farm named J&B Blue Lavender farm.
Seaside swings of Brač
I was pretty suprised to see them in almost every place on the island, such a tropical feeling and so funny.
You can visit them at Beach bar Trsteno at Postira, at Sutivan, at Bol (which I guess appeared during summer as I didn’t see it one month ago), in Milna, Bobovišča n/m and Sumartin at the beach Puntica. Most of them I found on instagram but one in Bol and Sutivan I found by chance. Though I haven’t visited yet those in Milna, Bobovišća and Sumartin.
All in all
Island Brač bursts with elegance and olives everywhere you watch. I was pretty surprised how enveloped in the flowers it looks during early summer. Island Brač is not only the popular Bol and Zlatni Rat beach. Its stone will simply captivate you.

What language/languages do they primarily speak on htis island? If an English-speaking traveler were to find themselves washed up on these gorgeous beaches, how much Duolingo preparation should she do beforehand? 🙂
