Burano. How to start describing Burano? That it’s like a fairy-tale? Yes, it’s such an unbelievable place. Burano and Murano are easily reachable from Venice, though being isolated islands. Valporetto will take you in 45 minutes to Burano from the main train station Santa Lucia where you can also buy the tickets. In Burano you will discover all kinds of lace in every shape and glass production in Murano. You can also visit the island Torcello. On the way to Burano it’s fascinating to see the airport Marco Polo.
Sounds very creative to be immerged in the empire of lace, but every step on Burano burns with creativity. Every house has a different colour, bridges connect the streets and the balconies are heart-shaped. Compelling?
If you’re in Venice, you should visit Abano and Montegrotto Terme.

1. “Waiting for peace”- amazing sculpture in Burano
A sculpture „Waiting for the peace“ will await you just upon the arrival of ferry. Lying in front of a big meadow with Burano unveling, it’s an amazement on the first view. It’s the love on a first view. The artist is Remigio Barbaro whose another sculpture dedicated to the musician Baldassare Galuppi stays on the main square.
2. Amazing shops & caffe bars
Shops with many, many laces and souvenirs are around every corner. Even dresses are from lace. So many different patterns will delight you in a thousand ways. Only these little souvenirs make me want to move to Burano. My presumption was that there are only few shops and caffes, but the whole island is one sweet oasis of creativity with plenty of shops.
There’s a glass shop melted with the small glass factory here in Burano, not only in Murano. It’s situated in Via Giudecca 132, also know as New Arte Fuga. In the same street the old fish market is to be visited. The old fish market or Pescaria Vecia is the point to enjoy sunsets or photographs or both.
3. Lace Museum- the symbol of Burano
Lace museum proudly stays on the big square next to the Town Hall. Once it was a lace school. Can you imagine the little Burano being the homeland of lace? The real handmade lace is an expensive product and some of them are only chinese supstitituons.
4. Three bridges
Straight upon coming to Burano, the images of colourful houses will start to appear like fireworks. Knitted between the canals and bridges there’s a place of the Three Bridges (Tre ponti). It’s the crossroad of the three most colourful streets of Burano, place to pick up the dreams and fly with the colours. The sweet wooden bridges have found the proper place in the picturesque world of Burano. You will not know what is more nice: the bridges, colourful houses or canals with boats. It is instead one big picture perfect as it is.
As I’ve noticed from valporetto the tower of Burano is leaning and leading to the predominance of the main square.
At the main square there’s a small fountain with fresh drinking water. Richness of Burano comes along with this fountain made of istrian stone.
5. Bepi House in Burano
Every step in Burano is magical. I haven’t found the house of Bepi but I found another similar house rich with colours. Bepi’s house is one of the most colourful houses in Burano decorated with triangles, squares and circles. Bepi or Giuseppe Toselli is just one of the inhabitants of Burano, a movie fan that worked at the local Cinema Flavin and later at sweet shop. At this point the name Bepi of candies sticks to him.
Just rolling around the streets of Burano is enough, there’s nothing more to add to the sweet place as such. But there’s more to see.
Final thoughts
Who has visited Burano? What did you like the most? Though it’s not easy to single out one particular thing about Burano, in my mind bursts out the lace and all the creativity it represents. The peaceful place like Burano sounds like the perfect background to develop all kind of laces. The cheerful visual endowment is brought by colours, romantics is hidden by every bridge, by every view, by every decoration. Burano is indeed one of the most beautiful places I saw.
Don’t hesitate to discover Burano for the short release. It’s a discovery you can only imagine.

I visited Burano during my time in Venice and absolutely loved it, the lace museum was a great visit. It was amazing watching them make the lace by hand, and of course it’s incredibly picturesque which is always a nice thing x

Burano must be so beautiful. Venice is one of the Italian cities I still have to visit one day, and hopefully, I will manage to see Burano as well.

We were in Burano in September and it really was beautiful! Crowded, but beautiful. I wish we had done a bit more research and made a reservation at a good restaurant. Would also have been nice to go in more of the off-season with less people. But still worth a visit!
