Why you’ll be enchanted with the Arboretum Volčji Potok near Ljubljana

A place that offers relaxement for locals being the hidden gem at the same time- that’s the arboretum Volčji Potok. It’s the place where tulips dwell in all its colourful symphony. Not only Bled or Bohinj can be an excellent day trip from Ljubljana. If you’re visiting Slovenia, the valley of river Soča is such a delicacy requiring at least 2-3 days. When speaking about arboretum, check out this hidden gem in Croatia full of rhododendrons.

Volčji Potok allures with the richness of plants from all over the world throughout the months. Can you guess how many roses blow here? More than 1200 sorts according to the official site. Any ideas about the tulips? It’s around 2 000 000. Seems more than the stunning Keukenhof Gardens in Netherlands, famous about the tulips.

The floral exhibitions during the spring time bring lots of visitors and colourful cheer. Any time of year is happy time to visit the Arboretum. It’s the pure refreshment in the summer and golden oasis in autumn. In winter it lives in its white magic.

History of Arboretum Volčji Potok near Ljubljana

Arboretum Volčji Potok opened its doors in 1952. Untill 1885 it was the property of Souvan family. At that time it gets under the University of Ljubljana.

The historian Valvasor wrote about arboretum in his book. Several owners exchanged during the years. Before Ferdinand Souvan in 1882, it was in the hands of Bonhomo, Burger and Gozani family. Building the walls was the task of Ferdinand Souvan, but his son pull them down.

In 1965 University ceased to lead the property, but in 1999 Slovene Ministry of Culture takes the rule.

What to expect to see in Arboretum Volčji Potok near Ljubljana

The river of tulips flows in April in almost entire arboretum. The enchanting cherry blossons fill the air at the end of April when they already fade in Paris. Rhododendrons allure with charm the steps of May. June is the time of roses with more than 3000 of them shining in their tender colours.

Tropical plants like cactuses or orchids enpower the greenhouses.

The tranquil beauty of arboretum softens the soul along the lovely brooks.

Arboretum bursts with events all over the year, the best way to check them is at the official website. The magical splash of colours takes its highlight with the queen of flowers- roses. Rose exhibition takes place from 22.05.-26.09.

From dinosaurs in December, orchids the whole year Arboretum awakes joy with narcissus, cactuses and many others.

Movie nights happen from time to time, recently with the silent movie in August. Children workshops are the oasis of creativity for the special day.

How to come to Arboretum Volčji Potok from Ljubljana

Arboretum Volčji Potok takes place at the village Volčji Potok, just near the Radomlje. To Radomlje drives the direct bus from Ljubljana bus station. Radomlje village is only 15 minutes walk to arboretum, just straight.

The prices is rather high- 9€ but definitely worth it.

Final thoughts

Most tourists discover Bled as nearest to Ljubljana but arboretum Volčji Potok is such a paradise to discover. Specially for botanical lovers. Tulips take the throne giving the medal to roses. It’s an oasis of tranquility and place to return with always new spell.

    The Arboretum sounds like a beautiful place to go to, especially in such a beautiful country as Slovenia. I had the luck to go there once many years ago, but should visit again and then I’ll have to pay a visit to see these gardens. Thank you for sharing this and amazing pictures.
