Practicing Yoga before hiking
Warming up with yoga prepares your body to feel the coziness of muscles and more balance to strengthen your journey. These poses are suitable for general well-being, not just for the hiking purposes.
Tree pose (Vrksasana)
Though being the classical posture and one of the best exercises to gain balance, I always struggle with it after years of doing yoga. Tree pose will pour your confidence on the rocky terrain while feeling cozy with your spine. Improving balance is tightly blended with the focus of practicing the tree posture.
Stand straight while bending your right leg (exchange each leg) just above your knee. Your whole weight exists on the opposite leg as your spine stretches like a tree.
When you find the balance, stretch your arms high or put them in the Anjali Mudra (prayer position). These two versions of the Tree posture should exchange so you can absorb the vibes of tree waves.
Warrior2 (Virabhadrasana)
Strengthening ankles, legs and arms is so essential for hiking and this posture will exquisitely help to achieve such goals. Starting with the Mountain pose (standing with the legs next to each other and arms stretched down) take a step backward with your left leg.
Raise your arms parallel to your legs while pressing your feet down. Your right knee should stand over your ankle, slightly bending.
With your chest forward hold this pose for 30 seconds and repeat 4 times. Press both heels to make the outcome and bring your feet together.
This pose is benevolent for shoulders preparing your body to endure hours with your backpack.
Cat/cow pose (Marjaryasana/Bitilasana)
In the gentle flow stretching your spine, the fullest flexibility level rises. Your arms, legs and even the abdominal organs move softly opening the breath to follow the whole rhythm.
Cat-cow pose also relieves stress and gives balance to the nervous system.
Downward-facing dog Adho Mukha Svanasana
Keeping your legs bent helps your spine receive a wonderful stretch. Downward-facing dog is not only beneficial for your spine but the whole body- your arms, shoulders, abdomen and legs. Stimulating the blood circulation, it’s a fantastic pose to rest and reconnect with your breath.
This pose will relieve the struggles of carrying your backpack by providing extra space to your shoulders.
Start bending down with your spine and arms creating a triangle. Spread your fingers while strengthening the arms and keeping your knees bent. Bringing your knees back to the floor you’re leaving the pose. The best way would be to turn to the Child’s pose to finish.
Yoga poses after the hike
After the whole day of the hike, the best recharging shines in the simple postures that will renew your energy. It energizes whole body and mind helping you to stay in focus and concentrated.
Standing frog pose
The quadriceps (front thigh muscles) can become sore the day after the hike and this is an excellent pose to extend them to the fullest.
It’s done by standing with your arms fixed to the wall while bending your right leg just behind your buttock. You can also do it without the wall support but it can be challenging for those with tight knees. Continuing to bend the right leg, press the tailbone more towards the wall. Take this pose for 30 seconds and continue on the other side.
Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes)
Also known as the Seated Twist, this posture offers a fantastic massage of the spine and abdominal organs. Having a rejuvenating effect on the body and mind it will improve blood circulation and smooth the nervous system.
Bending your left knee on the floor you cross the right knee towards your chest. Twist towards the right with your head pressing the opposite thigh. Your head follows your torso experiencing a deep spiral relief and connecting breath.
There are several variations of this pose but all of them provide an exquisite refreshment of the spine. The more challenging version involves the right hand that catches the left wrist.
Pidgeon pose Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana
Pidgeon ideally helps to relieve shoulders, neck and buttock muscles. Providing extensive movement to the whole body, pidgeon opens the hip zone and chest region. In this way it gives you the boost of energy and improves posture.
Bend your right knee towards the right wrist and slide the left leg entirely behind. At the same time lower your buttock and extend the spine while slightly rising your head.
Dancer’s pose (Natarajasana)
A fantastic balance of the dancer’s pose is a symbol of yoga and engages the whole body in a sense of stability.
Natarajasana involves staying on one leg like a swan while holding the foot with your hand. Stretching the hand behind you’re extending the neck, shoulder and the whole frontal body.

Feeling so renewed is inevitable even if I practice it the day after. Besides reducing the risk of injury, yoga improves your flexibility and strengthens the muscles. Yoga is more than stretching, it’s an inner journey that heals our glands and the whole being.
