7 stunning viewpoints in Porto that will enchant your sunset adventure

Porto is a magnificent city where many hills play a main role to lead you to stunning sunsets. The river Douro is a heart of the city where life flows elegantly, compared to the Gaya city across. If you would like to experience the source of Douro Valley and its marvelous vineyard scenery, start in Pinhao. Pinhao will take you to the hiking wonders all the way from the legendary Sao Bento train station.

Along the lovely parks and bridges, the itinerary of Porto unveils its ancient spirit and awesome sunsets.

Being close to the Atlantic ocean, it’s an incredible power in the place where river meets the beach. It reminds of a stunning experience with Nomad Cruise while crossing the Atlantic from Tenerife to Brazil. Though there’s more than I can depict in this post, in the few days in Porto sunsets will be the leading point.

This post contains links which could help me to earn a small commission at no extra cost for you. Thank you for reading and supporting Under Flowery Sky.

Louise I Bridge- the most famous Porto viewpoint

The legendary bridge in Porto connects the city with another town, Villa Nova de Gaia. On the other side, you can find cheaper boat rides along the river Douro. This beautifully constructed bridge is one of the most popular tourist spots in Porto, a place with an incredible panorama.

Down the bridge you can find the most elegant restaurants, ice cream shops and enjoy the street musicians. From the bridge, you can admire the Serra do Pilar Monastery, a getaway to Gaia city.

Enjoying the boats flowing feels so serene on this historical bridge while you observe the trams passing by. You can easily cross the bridge to Gaia which is only a few steps away from the heart of Porto.

Catching the cable car in Gaia will lead you to more stunning views.

To get more amazing impressions, see my Instagram reel that includes Louis I Bridge, the Cathedral viewpoint and more.

Jardim de Morro

Just across the bridge in Gaia hides the lovely park, Jardim do Morro. With the fascinating scenery of Porto and the bridge in all its beauty, it’s an unmissable sunset spot.

While enjoying the golden rays of Porto, the street musicians will feel your day.

If you’re willing to enjoy the sunset elegantly, visit the Jardin do Morro Bar. Though pricey, this rooftop bar will offer you fantastic wines, beers and cocktails.

Miradouro da Rua das Aldas (near the Cathedral)

Bursting with incredible vibes, Miradouro da Rua das Aldas is such a relaxing place close to the Sao Bento train station. With wonderful views, you can enjoy the street musicians in an elegant atmosphere near the columns.

Visiting the marvelous Cathedral or in Portuguese Sé do Porto is one of the best sights to choose. You’ll see the beautiful tiles, capturing some of the most stunning photos of Porto. Just across the Cathedral lies the fascinating Bishop’s Palace, where the amazing Baroque staircase will welcome you.

Parque de Palacio de Crystal

This cute park feels tiny but it’s packed with immense beauty. Parque de Palacio de Crystal bursts with elegance and what makes it even more astonishing are its lovely inhabitants- peacocks. As you admire the golden fantasy, you may even catch a very Instagramable capture with peacocks.

With the gorgeous views of Porto’s bridges, you’ll enjoy a serene atmosphere. Adding this stunning place in Porto’s itinerary with the sunset atmosphere is unmissable. While still close to the center, it requires a 15-minute walk.

Downhill the Parque of Quinta da Macieirinha following the first park hides a charming stone tower. Officially, Torreao do Jardim do Palacio is one of the prettiest spots to watch the sunset in Porto. From the rose garden to the other aromatic plants, Parque de Palacio Crystal will be your fantastic oasis inside a busy city.

Virtudes Garden

Miradouro da Virtudes is a tiny passage with a chilly vibe, not particularly instagramable but covering fantastic views. Being by lovely bars and restaurants, it’s a favourite viewpoint of locals and tourists that come along. Enjoying a lazy drink blends perfectly with this place so prepare yourself.

Passing by here was unmissable with the Porto Free Walking Tour.

Miradouro da Vittoria

Though it’s praised as a hidden gem, it’s a popular spot to enjoy the sunset in Porto. This serene viewpoint unveils the incredible views of the Cathedral, bridges and Gaia in the background.

Nestled in a peaceful terrace, Miradouro da Vittoria follows the hilly path close to the Clerigos Tower.

Arrabida Bridge

When it was completed in 1963, Arrabida Bridge was known as the world’s largest concrete bridge. This is the reason why it deserves to be on this list. Not only can you watch the sunset from Arrabida bridge, but climb its 262 steps- sounds fascinating? From six different bridges in Porto, Arrabida bridge gives you a unique opportunity to experience the city.

Climbing some bridge might appear only in the movie, but this adventure in Porto you can do it legally. For 20€ you can see the majestic sunset and it’s advisable to book it online. Even the night experience is in offer, costing 10€ more.

Foz do Douro

Heading to the beach to see the incredible sunset views and what better place than Foz do Douro to choose? Where river blends with the ocean, it’s like you transferred worlds away.

Though it’s a bit away from the city’s center, visiting Foz do Douro means seeing Porto in a new light. After all, being so close to the beach and skipping it- what would you rather? Reaching Foz do Douro is actually very easy, taking about 20 minutes with a bus.

Beyond the beach and lovely bars, you can enjoy the elegant arch, taking photos with the lighthouse and castle. The yellow arch or Pergola do Foz is a perfect place to have captures of Foz do Douro in its serene atmosphere.

Another popular beach- Matashinos- looks more urban so I would rather recommend Foz do Dour. Reaching Matashinos from Foz do Douro takes about 30 minutes by foot following Castello do Queijo.

Watch my Instagram reel and be transferred to Foz do Douro instantly!

The most stunning caffe bars in Foz do Douro

Restaurante Praia da Louz in my opinion has the most alluring view to the ocean being next to the beach. Imagine the colours of your lovely cocktail while admire the sunset treasure of gold.

Foz do Douro has plenty of bars and restaurants to discover which tend to be a bit pricey.

Eleven Sports Bar Foz at Ourigo Beach bursting with sport decor and having burgers as its most common choice.

For those in the dancing mood, Clube Xeque Mate is a fantastic place with its cozy atmosphere and piano setting. When speaking about nightlife, Indústria is a nightclub in Foz offering stunning vibes.

Not in Foz do Douro, but you have to check Honest Greens- its tahini specialty coffee, Porto

Final thoughts

Porto holds the essence of the Portuguese lifestyle with its laidback atmosphere and traditional tiles. Watching the sunsets from its iconic bridges and parks absorbs the incredible beauty of Porto. Can you imagine climbing the Arrabida bridge or that across Porto is another city?

With the incredible viewpoints you can just watch the life passing by and enjoying the street music. Visiting the wonderful Foz do Douro will enrich your Porto itinerary.

Beyond the famous sights such as the Lello library or Sao Bento train station, Porto’s diversity includes the marvelous viewpoints.

The sunsets in Foz do Douro are some of my favorites. My other go-to beach sunset is in Leça da Palmeira, just past Matosinhos.
