We’ve all been there- you’ve planned a beautiful family hike, packed the snacks, laced up the boots… and 15 minutes in, you hear: “I’m bored”. The good news? Hikes can be exciting, memorable and fun for kids- with just a little creativity. Family hikes in more than 20 stunning destinations in Europe will bring more than stunning photos on the way.
Here are 5 tried and true ways to keep kids engaged on hikes so they’ll say “When’s our next adventure?” before you’re even back home.
1. Turn the Trail into a Nature Scavenger Hunt
Kids love a challenge and a scavenger hunt is the perfect way to keep their eyes open and their minds curious. Create a simple checklist before your hike and include things like:
- A bird with bright feathers
- Three different kinds of leaves
- A smooth, round rock
- Something that smells nice (like a flower or pine needles
Taking photos during group trails becomes a fun adventure to include to your story and learn how to follow the route.
The joy of “checking off” discoveries will keep them focused and moving forward.
💡Pro tip: My Kid’s Hiking Journal already includes nature observation prompts to make scavenger hunts easy and fun. You can just pack it and go!

2. Let them lead the way
Giving kids a sense of responsibility on the trail makes them feel important and involved. Hand them a map, compass or even let them choose between two trail options.
Even small decisions like “Which way should we go?”can make them more invested in the journey.
3. Tell A Story Along The Trail
Transform your hike into a moving storytime. Pick a character- maybe a mountain fairy, a brave hiker or a curious animal- and weave an adventure as you walk.
With the marvelous rock formations and unusual tree shapes, some hiking trails weave vivid fairy tale stories. Experiencing castles out of rocks and fairy valley in Gorski Kotar brought such stories directly on our hike. Some of the trails have incredible land art like the gorgeous Lake Ledro or cozy family trail at Plose mountain near very charming Bressanone in the Dolomites
Encourage the kids to add their own twists and ideas. You’ll be surprised how quickly the road passes when you’re deep in a magical tale.

4. Give Them a Hiking Journal
Kids are natural observers- they notice things we adults often miss. A Hiking Journal gives them a place to capture those discoveries through drawing, writing or ticking off fun prompts.
It turns a simple walk into a creative adventure, and later those pages become a keepsake you’ll treasure for years.

5. Plan Special Breaks
Let’s be honest- snacks are a huge motivator for kids (and adults!). Plan small milestone where you’ll stop for a treat, take a silly photo or play a quick game.
These little breaks give kids something to look forward to and help pace the hike in a fun way.
Final Thoughts
Keeping kids engaged in hikes is all about making the journey as exciting as the destination. With a bit of creativity- and maybe a Kids’ Hiking Journal in their backpack

Great ideas. Our kids were so different, and therefore different things motivated them. For one, it was all about letting him decide which trail to do (and he lead the way from there). For the other, he liked to sing songs as he walked.
These are awesome! I like the scavenger hunt idea – it must be tough keeping kids interested otherwise!!
Great ideas! My youngest likes to play the “I Spy” game on hikes lately!
These are all great ideas! I especially love the scavenger hunt! I will have to do this next time I’m on the trails with my grandkids.
I love these ideas, especially the scavenger hunt! It’s such a fun thing to do for kids and adults.
I don’t have kids but these are all such great ideas! Snacks are the best motivator to keep going. I know my almost 3-year-old niece would have so much fun with all these hiking tips!
These are great ideas! You should take up geocaching as a lot of people hide caches along hiking trails and kids are great at finding them. Have fun!
