Whether it’s a street photography or shooting the sky, night photography has its own magic to master. Don’t avoid the nighttime to create magnificent photos, but learn to bring your skills to the highest level.

Focus- the essence of night photography

Even if you use your tripod or try autofocus, the challenges of night photography are inevitable. Mainly, the autofocus can be quite successful with bright stars but it’s not always the case. Manual focus is a way to get the most precise images so that should be your primordial preoccupation.

Considering the bright spots and autofocusing on them will bring the most productive results. Focusing on the edge of your bright spots you’ll bring brilliant contrast to your photos.

After finding the right focus, try to move your camera to refocus. Even in the very dark scenes, your focus solves the situation.

Night photography settings

There’s not a strict answer which settings to use as it depends on location, situation and even your gear. Experimenting is essential and that’s what you should focus on. The lighting brings the most powerful solution to your settings.

When speaking about the light, the longer exposure leads to the best results. The long exposure is crucial when you capture movements or street life.

Shot in the manual mode- a secret to night photography

Manual mode is the secret to the perfection that creates your photos. While adjusting the exposure with aperture, ISO and shutter speed you’ll reach your goals much quicker.

Taking photos in manual mode is the basis of any kind of photography and that’s what makes a difference.

ISO

Iso is the sensitivity your camera shows to the light. After increasing your Iso, you will get more light. The higher you put the Iso, the digital noise becomes more frequent. The most common situation is to set your Iso between 200 and 800. In this way, you will avoid the digital noise and still have the high Iso.

Aperture and shutter speed

The more we lower the aperture, the less light it gets inside. That’s why the photos get more sharp. On the contrary, the larger aperture brings more light into the camera.

The advisable aperture to use is mostly around f/5.6-8.0, which will get a lot of light and sharp images.

When speaking about exposure, the shutter speed plays a final role. Just like the name suggests, shutter speed is the speed by which the camera opens the shutter. Shutter speed creates dramatic effects on the images and brightness. In the certain length of time camera enables light to create the picture. The longer shutter speed results in the blur effect and it’s a magic behind the flowing waterfalls.

The quick shutter speed freezes the action when capturing birds or cars.

Gear is no so important

Yes, it’s true- gear doesn’t matter as much as you think that professional equipment is the key. Even simple mobile captures can turn into pure magic. Stabilizing the phone with your hands is essential if you don’t use tripod. While enjoying the scenery, take a few moments to fully absorb it.

The essential about night photography is using what you have in the most effective way. It’s to be in the right place at the right moment.

Experiment with the photos

Don’t expect that you’ll get the perfect photo the first time but invest in your patience. Experimenting with your settings will give you the best results so take your time to see what works.

Being creative is the process that will give you a chance to learn new skills in photography.

Different styles of night photography

Night portraits

The easiest way to capture night images is with portraits, where you should apply everything you learned about photography. Focusing on light or avoiding it is the way to make your portraits look magical. Silhouettes become particularly attractive where you can play a lot.

Putting your background in the bokeh creates an incredible effect without much effort. With the flash, not only your portraits will turn stunning but also the background. Low aperture is your answer to have magnificent photos, particularly f/2.8.

Capturing the sky provides the best results out in nature and even brings some kind of mystery. The street lights give such an obstacle as you try to get the clearest sky. Shooting the stars is pretty challenging, but you should blend it with an incredible landscape. The brightest star should be your focus giving you the chance to practise incredible creativity. Increasing the shutter speed helps if your photo is too dark.

Using your tripod is particularly helpful while capturing the sky thanks to the long exposures.

Landscape photography

Landscape photography holds a tiny line with the astro photography and is pretty challenging during the night. Moon as the exquisite source of light offers fabulous ideas that will burst your creativity. Framing your captures brings an ideal solution to turn your night photos to a new level.

Street photography

Though being challenging, sometimes you just need to focus on the composition, details and interesting locations. Freezing the person is your ultimate concern and depends upon the shutter speed. A long shutter speed is perfect for night street photography as it brings brighter exposure. The shutter speed of 1/80 is ideal in this case.

The street lights should be your main source of inspiration depending on the composition.

Final thoughts

Though night photography can be less attractive than day photography, it can bring certain magical results. Learning about your settings will amaze you while experimenting to reach the goals. Capturing a new perspective of the same location unveils the secrets of creativity.

The natural light is your source of inspiration and a way to play with challenging situations. Night photography brings fun as you develop new skills and try to notice the lovely details.

I hope this guide will help you to get out there and be brave enough for a couple of creative night photos.

This was nice and useful as even though I don’t tend to take a lot of photographs at night, there have been occasions where I wanted to and they did not come out so well. Thanks for this!
